does anyone think that aspies/hfa people would make good attorneys? i'm curious because i used to toy with the idea of going to law school, and some close relatives have said they think i'd make a great lawyer.

people with AS would make bad lawyers for two reasons:
1. Law is very abstract and grey. You have to be very very good at reading between the lines and understanding neuance. People with AS typically are more black and white and mechanical.

2. Lawyers are lawyers second, salesmen first. If you are a lawyer, you most likely will be in a law firm where you will constantly have to sell the business, ie find new clients and get them to use your firm. This requires good people skills. If you think working in customer service at wal mart is bad, wait until you realize how extraverted and customer service oriented being a lawyer is

I have a friend who urges me to become a paralegal for my memory, he says that it would work because of how I handle data.

My (strongly suspected) aspie dad is a lawyer.

He failed in private practice, but did very well as city attorney and at his current job at CYFD.

Woah, I disagree with that. While many lawyers are dishonest, it is a severe stereotype to call them all dishonest liars. Just as severe a stereotype as saying that all Autistic people sit on the floor and bang their head against the wall.

I agree that being a paralegal would be a better fit for an aspie. Not as much social interaction, more hitting the books!

Well, I think an aspie would be good at looking outside the square.

Its really more of a human thing, not dto do with being aspie.. you'd make a good lawyer or you wouldn't.

Law isn't so much as lying, but being able to nitpick semantics and find new perspectives and interpretations to existing laws ;) It's not entirely evil. Personally I've given the thought of doing international and human rights law to help asylum seekers.

Also, some positions depend upon telling as much truth as possible.

Perhaps the concept of fudging the truth [not outright lying, but rather omitting certain truths] might be difficult, though.

I think that an Aspie would be great at some aspects of law and have offen though of getting a law degree.
My reservations are this: 1) Court room
2) Attracting Clients
3) Keeping Partners happy
4) Keeping employees happy

Depends what type of lawyer and area of law, not all lawyers spend all day arguing in court, in fact very few do, there are usually a few specialists who do just that, then others who do other stuff like work out the details and so forth.

In my opinion, lawyering and statesmanship get a bad rep. I am highly interested in law and politics and do not consider myself to be of dishonest character. Whether I'd make a good lawyer or politician is hard to say, but I am good at persuasion and nitpicky analysis.

I knew someone whose ex-husband was a lawyer. She said he lost his moral compass, his sense of right and wrong. It became all about winning. That probably doesn’t happen to all lawyers, but it is a risk.
