Am I on the right track????
My name is Melody and I'm 34. I have an 11 year old that has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I am pretty sure that myself and my 5 year old also have it. I don't want a diagnosis, I just want to know if I am on the right track. I am tired of living how I have been for the past 30 plus years. I put together a list for my doctor of all my sensory issues and other "odd" issues I have had throughout my life. Would someone out there with Asperger's take a look at it and just let me know if I am on the right track?
Auditory Issues
• Can’t understand anyone with an accent. Tried to watch Snatch 3 times, the 4th time I put on the subtitles and finally got it.
• Loud, high pitch, and/or repetitious sounds are painful and annoying.
• I hear things other people don’t. The fridge and water dripping are the worst.
• I have always thought people were talking about me.
• I misinterpret others tone of voice.
• Feel like people are yelling when they aren’t.
• I have to write everything down and do things hands on. I can’t be told orally how to do something.
• I say “What?” and “Huh?” often.
• Can’t have a conversation with more than one person and actually pay attention.
• Extremely good at identifying voices.
• Had tubes put in my ears twice as a small child.
Smell Issues
• I smell inanimate objects.
• I can “taste” with my nose.
• I can tell who someone is by their smell sometimes.
Visual Issues
• I have to watch myself walk. Can’t look up for anything.
• Have problems with stairs. My heel has to hit the back of the stairs while going down. I also have to be able to see where I’m walking.
• Very sensitive to light.
• Double vision
• Trouble lining stuff up by looking at it but I don’t stop till everything is even.
• My house is usually dark. Curtains drawn and lights turned off.
• I stare off into space.
• I hate eye contact. I get extremely uncomfortable.
• Confuse my left and right.
• I have issues with spatial distance. I trip on curbs, always curb check when I drive, and can’t parallel park to save my life.
Touch Issues
• Hate being touched.
• If you poke me or tap me I freak out.
• I hate clothing. I pull tags out. Seams on socks, underwear, and jeans irritate me. I only wear a bra and underwear when I go out in public.
• I have always worn baggy clothing. I can’t wear anything that clings to me.
• I wear flip flops year round. I hate shoes.
• I can’t walk barefoot outside. It’s painful.
• My toes have to touch something all the time.
• I make everyone take off their shoes when they come into my house, but I always have flip flops on.
• I can’t jump or climb. I will take the long way around if need be.
• I have a HIGH tolerance for pain. I gave birth to my now 5 year old without any meds just for “fun”. I have many tattoos and enjoy getting them. I have pierced my own belly button, nose, and lip.
• When someone tickles me, it’s painful.
• I love the feeling of sneezing.
• Hate brushing my hair. It’s extremely painful.
• Hate fabric rubbing on the bottom of my feet.
• Dislike messy play and am strict with my kids about it.
• Wet socks are torture.
• You couldn’t pay me to touch a cotton ball. Not only is the feeling awful, but the sound it makes in between your fingers is extremely painful.
• I dislike anything that vibrates. The repetition and feeling is irritating.
Oral/Taste Issues
• I eat foods because of their texture (preferably crunchy). I over cook foods like cookies and steak to make them crunchy around the edges.
• I don’t eat foods because of their texture (hamburger and cottage cheese).
• I don’t eat foods just because of their smell (peanut butter makes me nauseous).
• I have a salt “addiction”.
• I rub my tongue on my teeth constantly.
• I chew on my fingers and bite my nails.
• I love to bite. I get a rush from it.
• Had a speech therapist when I was young.
• Have a hard time “spitting” words out.
• I talk constantly.
• Often, more times than not, I end up talking to myself.
• I interrupt and talk out of turn.
• If someone doesn’t understand me, I have a hard time repeating myself unless it’s about something I am interested in.
• I have a very hard time saying no, even if I want to. If I do say no, I usually end up doing it anyway.
• Have always talked with “big words”.
Other issues
• Have to lean on something always.
• Feel like my head is “too heavy” and my neck can’t hold it up.
• Easily fatigued.
• Always sit Indian style. Even in restaurants, school, and movie theaters.
• I switch between my heat and air conditioning constantly in one day. One minute I’m freezing and the next I’m burning up.
• Grew up wondering why people didn’t like me. Don’t have many close relationships (including family).
• Prefer to stay home.
• As a child I was overly affectionate. Have had problems as a teenager/adult distinguishing between love and sex.
• Feel as if I have “lost” my imagination.
• I have trouble falling asleep because I am always “thinking”. My brain doesn’t seem to stop.
• Crying for no reason.
• Easily offended by other’s tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language.
• I take everything literally.
• If I start something I have to finish it. It bugs the crap out of me or never gets done.
• When I’m interested in something I am very detail oriented. If I’m not interested I just don’t care and either procrastinate or avoid the issue.
• I have had odd interests my whole life. Geology, Meteorology, Sociology, Psychology, lighthouses, religion, natural disasters, vampires, ect.
• People are easily aggravated by me.
• I laugh when I hear someone has died or something bad happened. (I hate that!!)
• I have been fired from most of my jobs because of my mouth.
• I always say the wrong thing or its offensive to most people.
• I can’t control what I say very well. Extremely blunt and honest.
• I have a very hard time lying.
• Hate anyone touching my stuff or moving it.
• Everything has to be done a certain way. No one does my laundry or my dishes. I have showered “the same way” for as long as I can remember. I can’t change things up.
• I can’t leave anything alone and have an opinion about everything. I have to make my point always and don’t know how to walk away.
• I have always ate the same things, watched the same things, and go to the same places.
• Odd things are comforting to me. For example, I put on the Weather Channel daily (have for years and years) and leave it on as background noise.
• Was able to read, comprehend, and quote “adult” books by age 5.
• I have been called the following things by numerous people throughout my entire life: selfish, obsessive, crazy, annoying, extremely naïve, melodramatic, extremely loud and obnoxious, and a know it all.
Did you have a speech delay? If so, then you probably don't have Asperger's but rather high-functioning autism which is almost the same.
No, not a speech delay. I had trouble with pronounciation.
