So the only reason I was able to afford counseling was because, of compensation for what happened at my school to give me PTSD.....and now that has run out so I have one more meeting with my counseler and chances are I will not switch to any other counseling unless I can get it for free. Not sure if its good or bad, I mean the counseling does not really do a whole lot.....or maybe I just don't feel like it does any good.

I just feel like it was kind of a waste because I did not even get a fully official diagnoses and probably cannot afford to do so, so yeah its kind of annoying that they only way for me to get professional help is to have more money then I have. But I guess I will just have to manage without it.

Does anyone else find the health care system in this country rather useless.....especially when it comes to giving people access to psychological help?

Healthcare is becoming an oxymoron. As the medical services field becomes increasingly wed to corporate interests, the 'care' is for profit, not health.

I feel in my situation that i haven't gotten help from the therapist i have been seeing for awhile now. The Psyc sent me for testing but not AS testing and they refuse to think i have AS at all. I got a handful of diagnosis that they say isn't autism related but yet my children's Psyc says it is Autism. I am staying with my psychiatrist for meds but other then that in my situation i feel like the therapist i saw was a waste and not helpful. i wish i had a therapist with a relative of AS even for instance that just could say they understand me and also help me cope with my issues is all i ask. I wish you the best but that is my current situation.

If you mention a psychiatrist at my shrink place, everyone will automatically ask you if you want meds. The only purpose of the psychiatrist is to prescribe meds. But what if I don't know if I want or need meds, because I don't know if I have a condition requiring meds? I suppose one could fake a condition to acquire whatever meds one wanted. The whole mental health setup is farcical. There is only one adult psychologist who is on sabbatical most of the time.

I think counsellors are a mixed bunch.....in my experience most of them seem to have problems with prejudice and with dominating, and with jumping to conclusions that follow their personal, pet therapy method. Even if you get a good one, they'll probably get changed for a bad one just when you thought you were getting somewhere.

The good ones have given me some useful insights - e.g. that a boring relationship I was in was boring because it had stopped developing, and not because there was anything intrinsically dull about the relationship. When I ranted about the behaviour of an ex, the counsellor said "there's got to be a reason why she's acting with such anger towards you." That set me thinking along the right path instead of just looking for support for my vitreol about the situation.

So overall I think it can be a good thing to have a "health professional" to talk to, when you're going through anything emotionally difficult......it does take some skill, and some people just can't counsel without bringing their own emotional baggage into the mix, but when it's done right, it helps you to consolidate your thoughts and make them more clear and real. I've always felt that it's a great shame we can't always depend on having friends to do all that for us, but even if we know such people, sometimes the subject matter is best reserved for somebody who isn't so involved in your life.

I think that counselling by email could work quite well for Aspies........it avoids the problems of working in realtime. I've heard it said that "talk" therapies don't work very well with Aspies.

yeah I don't know about that, I find it easier to talk to people in person, I have gotten advice on the internet but its not the same as actually talking to someone. But yeah even though I might benifit from further counseling, I probably can not afford it and I don't know that I am really intrested.
