I read how people with AS have problems with posture. I know that I do because I tend to hunch forward a lot when I sit down or whatever. I get a sore lower back from this too and its a bit of a hassle. >____< But if I sit up straight, I find it much harder to do so because its even MORE uncomfortable.

I was just wondering if anyone else with AS has this problem. I also had a friend who had AS and she hunched forward a lot when she would sit down. She said something to me about having back problems because if it. When she stood up you could tell how much it affected her back too and she said that they suspected she could have scoliosis.

But anyway, back on track... anyone have problems with posture? and if so, what have you down to help it? I need some ideas because I don't want to grow old and have bad back problems since that would be bad. >_____<

I have that exact same problem (minus the back aches). Because I hunch forward so much, my neck tends to stick out all the time.

Same here... sometimes my neck will get stiff too. It's a problem because unless I can lean back against something like a couch, or arm chair or even the seat of a car... I will lean forward and hunched.

I'm constantly told to hold my back straight and my shoulders up. When sitting, I slouch a lot.

My posture usually kind of sucks, but I don't really care......there is no way I can focus on forcing myself to stand up and sit up straight 24/7 or I won't be able to do anything else.

That's exactly how I feel. It's like, even if I try to I just feel its much harder because my back feels so tense.

I have it too. At my workplace I have a chair that I can lean to in a laid-back position, like if I was lazy, but more frequently I hunch forward, with or without my legs crossed. When I'm home, I assume even more unusual postures, like sitting on the ground/couch/chair in tailor seat or something similar, or with my legs pulled up while I hunch forward in a curly posture. Somehow it never came to me easy to sit at the table in normal posture.

I lean forward when I'm sitting down, and others tell me that I walk all stiff. However, I have no problems with my back.

Was just talking about this earlier yesterday... my posture is always a bit off, it seems. I've been constantly reminded by people around me to sit up straight, so some of it has improved. Still got problems, though.

It doesn't help to be told that if only I got into the habit of sitting and standing up straight, it would become second nature and I wouldn't feel it.

I also have poor posture. It is like I cannot hold myself in the proper position for long. It is not comfortable, and I just "forget" and naturally go back to my regular posture where my shouldars are hunched forward a bit.

Yep. I have very stiff lower back muscles, and can't even come close to touching my toes. Very very rigid. My shoulders sit back more than most people's too, shoulderblades closer together. I look odd next to most people.

When I'm sitting, I definitely slouch, hunch, whatever you like to call it. And I have to cross my feet at the ankles. I've tried not doing it, and there's no way.

I walk stiffly and quickly, usually with my hands in my pockets. I guess you could say I walk "with a purpose." I took some abuse for it when I was in school, but not much in the years since.

My youngest son used to constantly complain of sore legs, hips and back. I took him to a podiatrist and she pointed out that his ankles roll in and he has virtually no arches. Because of all that his knees knock together and he kinda sticks his butt out when he walks.
He now has inserts in his shoes to help give arches and to straighten him up, from there we went to a physio for some back strengthening exercises, one of the things that we've found useful is to roll a towel up and place it behind his lower back when he is sitting (which is a lot he loves his puter time) this helps push his back into the right position.
