AS is one of several ASDs. ASD (autism spectrum disorder) is an umbrella term that includes AS, HFA (high-functioning autism), PDD-NOS (pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified), and Kanner's/LFA (low-functioning autism).

Many of us were diagnosed with one of the others before we were diagnosed with AS. This is because AS was not listed on the DSM until 1994.

add retts and CDD to the list of ASDs as well.

jess162k7,it might be that have seen some people on forums say things like 'who has got as or asd',a lot of people are confused over aspergers and the autism spectrum, and think asd means autistic disorder [kanners syndrome] when it means all autism types.

what traits do have?

Some Aspies were diagnosed with ADHD before being diagnosed with AS.

AS stands for Asperger's syndrome, ASD for autism spectrum disorder. It is just a coincidence that they both have AS in them.

AS apparently wasn't even CONSIDERED by the English speaking world until 1981. It took another 13 years to be accepted as a valid standard diagnosis.
