stressout at doctors help! :S
today i had a doctors appointment...
it started well *sarcasm* i left at 4:12 and it takes about 30 minutes to get to the doctor.
my appointment was at 4:40.. after rushing to the doctors made it at 4:39 i then was stood waiting for the receptionist to finish her phone call by this point i am a little stressed out thus my IBS kicks in and i start getting bad stomach pains..
once she finishes its 4:47 and i say its my name and then she said to sit down .. i sat there and i just couldnt unstress my entire body felt tense and it wouldnt calm i tried my usual stimming behaviour and none of it worked i then found that all the sound and vision and smells ( the guy next to me stank) i couldnt cope and almost walked out...
bleh
anyway! after this i saw the doctor and she said my blood test was fine (was for a different matter). at 5:22 i got out of the doctors but as i left her office she said my autism assessment has been sent off for and i really worry about the whole assessment thing i dont know what to do :s help

I stress out at the doctors all the time. I usually take somebody with me because I feel less anxious if somebody else is along. I also make sure that I bring my earphones so I can drown out any anxiety inducing noises with my music; if you don't like music then earplugs are an option. I will also try to get 08.30 or 09.00 appointments so that I am likely to be the first person to be seen so I don't have to sit for ages. Also there are fewer people around at that time and if anyone is around it is usually the old folks who I don't find to be very stressing (unless they try to talk to me, I don't like anyone talking to me in situations like that but the earphones usually take care of that). So, by eliminating as many of the different stressors as possible I can make going to the doc tolerable. I still don't enjoy it though.
As far as the part about your assessment goes I don't think I can offer a vast amount of advice. I'm probably just a little further along that road than you - my first appointment with the consultant who deals with this stuff around here is in 3 weeks. I'm finding it epically stressful as well, it's really having a big negative effect on me but I think it will be fine once it all gets properly started. I'm just trying my best to keep distracted and that's about the best suggestion I have for you too I'm afraid :/
thanks
i will try the music thing next time i dont have to go back for another month about that problem but yeah i just want to know why i am so different i am in the UK and they seem to find asking the right questions difficult the first time i got put down as having anger issues... i am one of the most mild tempered people you can meet its only when i get stressed or there is too much stimulus that i get grouchy.. but yes if i could PM you about how yours is going it would really put my mind at ease at least for the moment ![]()

You'd be welcome to PM me but honestly there is nothing else I could tell you at the moment which isn't already up on the forums; there was a thread which I posted in recently in which people were discussing getting a diagnosis and I think a few were from the UK like us. I'll try to find it and post the link here. I'd be more than happy to PM you or make a thread after I have had the first appointment to tell you about what happened at that so you have an idea of what to expect. Although I'm pretty sure that different PCTs deal with these things differently (for any non-UK people PCT=Primary Care Trust; an organisational unit of our National Health Service) so it's not totally certain that my experience will be the same as yours. Still, it's useful to have encountered other people at a similar stage of all of this so I will definitely keep in touch about it.
