I observed about myself that I don't lack the capacity to elicit brainpower, but I find that its hard to "get my engine going" so to speak. Once I'm in a thinking mode, I can think lucidly, insightfully, and creatively, but these instances seldom happen, and most of the time its very hard to start or sustain being in the mental zone.

Can anyone else identify with this?

What ways do you guys use to activate the whole thought process, planning, manipulating objects in the mind, etc? are there mental tricks to it, a particular activity, etc? thank you for the advice!

Oh hell, I'd love to know too. I'm pretty much mentally fubar'd 95% of the time because I can't get in the right mind for it. :/

Yes, mental inertia, some element of perfectionism and difficulty planning - related to poor executive function.

Not overdoing things once you do start can help - sometimes, once I get started then I can work all through the day and through the night, and not eat or drink unless there are people to remind me. That gets into a cycle of nothing versus all-out, which is not productive.

Self-centering activities like making music, art or meditation are helpful. Anything that helps you spend some time alone in a way that switches off mental stress is centering.

I can also relate to that' I have to get myself into the mental zone to do things, but I can't seem to do that.

For me I'm starting to think that ADHD might be the culprit in the 'mental inertia'. I've got plenty of interests and lots of mental plans but physically making them happen is another story. I'm too much in my head at times to engage physically.
