In my family there has been roughly 1 person out of each of 4 consecutive generations that has been clearly on the spectrum (myself and my neice both diagnosed, my uncle (who is obsessed with trains, and he and my fathers uncle who couldn't write his own name but could fix anything electrical)

how consistently has AS shown up in your family?

My sister and my sister's son have it, as well as me. My parents are NT. I know nothing of previous generations since they were all killed in World War 2.

Without official dx it's hard to tell. My sister is diagnosed with bipolar, she shows some ASD traits too. My father might be an Aspie or at least a Semi-Aspie. My mother is NT with some mild memory problem and learning difficulty similar to mine.

About my grandparents, at least 3 of them were eccentric. My fraternal grandfather was the only surviving member of his family because of WWII, he wasn't worth to bring to the front, to his fortune. My maternal grandfather (whom I've never met or seen) was surely mentally ill (mildly, I suppose), but it hard to tell exactly by now. One of my cousins must be a Semi-Aspie.

My sister was diagnosed with bipolar but I didn't really know her past when I was 12. I don't think she suspected ASD. My nephew is diagnosed with ASD and his father (my brother) says he has some symptoms. I suspect my dad has at least some leanings toward the spectrum but my parents scoffed at the idea.

I have a step-nephew with severe autism but he's not blood related so doesn't count for the purposes of this thread. I don't have any idea about more distant relatives. We were never a close family.

My deceased uncle had aspie traits and my grandad.

which means 1 in every generation so far, though they may have just been semi aspie,

I'm virtually certain my Dad's Mother had AS, My Dad's Sister has a daughter who's been tentatively DX'd with it. My own Sister has a touch of dyslexia, but no autism, though one of her three kids has been diagnosed PDD-NOS, and I think she's an Aspie, too. Those are the only ones I know of, but I'm not as well acquainted with that side of the family as with my Mother's side, where no one seems to have it.

Funny, though, I think my Dad's side of the family are not especially close because they all have at least a touch of Aspie stand-offishness and quirky behaviors and just don't care to socialize much. Or maybe its just because we're Dutch.

I have a niece with severe OCD, but I am probably the only one with ASDs.

I only have one relative I know of who is confirmed to be on the spectrum, and that's my maternal grandmother's nephew. He's low-functioning autistic, and I've only met him in person once.

Otherwise, there are a few relatives, living and deceased, who I suspect might be/have been on the spectrum.

Although my dad was never diagnosed when he was alive, he did show a lot of autistic traits. My mom's convinced he had AS/HFA. Also my 2 nephews show traits of AS/HFA, but my sister keeps denying they're autistic. :/ I am the only female in my family that is autistic that I know of. :?

my dad's side has a collection of essentrics and obsessives...none formally diagnosed exept the one cousin who quit talking at 12.
my dad has OCD.
my grand mother on his side collected EVERYTHING that went into that house...nothing was ever thrown away. She still had church bullitins from 1972 in her desk drawer.
my grandfather on that side could possibly be aspie...he is quiet, always likes to watch the history channel, has subtle stims that he does all the time, maybe tics, not sure which where he makes an "o" with his mouth repeatedly but will stop while talking, has an unusual gait, but that is due to being very bow legged, socially always kinda been in the background, many times wont say anything unless you ask him a question. Very inteligent, but has trouble expressing his inteligence.

Then there is my uncle who was always very quirky and had alot of problems with consciquential thinking and problem solving and had strong special interests that nearly killed him, collecting pet rattlesnakes.

So I can definately see the connection there, but on my mom's side they are sooo normal it is scary.

Interesting how most people on this thread say it comes from thier dad's side, maybe its carried by the male parrent kinda like balding is carried by the female parrent???
