You have nothing to worry about. Retardation is based on a low IQ score.

ret*d means you have an IQ below 70. Intelligence Quotient is not synonymous with Social Ability.

Reciprocation is key. If he can keep dialogue up past 2 or 3 volleys, then you could say he's capable of socializing (Unless it's simple introductory crap or similar cookie-cutter crap.).

To other people, yes, you will be perceived as ret*d. If you DO show signs of intelligence in some capacity, then you'll be regarded as having mental problems. (Which "aspergers" does count, I guess...)

Ask me how I know!

Intellectually disabled people who are not autistic can run circles around us socially, as one poster here once put it.

In other words, "no."

No; mentally ret*d is something different. People with MR, in general, are slower to learn most things, not just socializing. Autism will specifically affect socialization and some other things, plus just plain give you atypical development--but not necessarily slower.

So they're just two different things. Both groups have trouble socializing, but it's for different reasons. In fact, socializing is often easier than other things for people with MR because they'll have more trouble with non-people-related things like schoolwork.

Plus, socialization is more dependent on memory than problem solving capacity, and most MR individuals have pretty normal memory so unless they're "very ret*d"(Let's say less than 60), they'll be able to interact with *someone* adequately. Actually, this one guy at my work place who scored with an IQ below 70 pulled me aside and asked me (I have an IQ of 140-150) whether I was "slow" or "special at school" because "other people have been saying there's something wrong with you", and he clearly ran circles around me socially. (He was a boisterous extrovert who loved to tell tall tales.)
