It depends on what you mean by independent.
I was not an independent autistic person when I was younger - as a child I could not bathe myself or speak for myself, and in my teens I was unable to go anywhere without holding onto my mothers arm. However I was the first of my friends to move away from home at 20 years old, and I currently live alone - now I consider myself independent. Others may not view me as independent because although I can do things alone sometimes I ask my boyfriend to help me, and as I'm unemployed (in part due to AS) I rely on benefits.
You're asking in a community where we are largely high-functioning, so you're have more independent people here than if you were to ask this about low-functioning autistic people - so by large I'd say most people with autism are not independent.
