Can most people with autism live independent lives or can most not? I heard that 40% live with their Parents, but what happens to the other 60%. Are they being independent or are maybe 20% or sonething in shared accomidation. Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks

I can't honestly answer without seeing other people's replies however I can say what I know about my own situation. I live in a group home having been kicked out of the family pad aged 20. The majority of the people I live with have moderate/severe behavioural problems which can sometimes involve violent behaviour, so I highly doubt that any of them will ever be independent. I myself, however ended up in care due to mental health problems mixing with my autism, and now that my mental health is better I am looking to move out by myself :)

I'm independent, but I'm only one person with autism.

I've made several attempts to live independently but have never really succeeded. Even when I was in a relationship and living with my partner, I found it difficult to manage as much as one might typically expect, and wasn't able to keep a job.

It depends on what you mean by independent.

I was not an independent autistic person when I was younger - as a child I could not bathe myself or speak for myself, and in my teens I was unable to go anywhere without holding onto my mothers arm. However I was the first of my friends to move away from home at 20 years old, and I currently live alone - now I consider myself independent. Others may not view me as independent because although I can do things alone sometimes I ask my boyfriend to help me, and as I'm unemployed (in part due to AS) I rely on benefits.

You're asking in a community where we are largely high-functioning, so you're have more independent people here than if you were to ask this about low-functioning autistic people - so by large I'd say most people with autism are not independent.

I'm mostly independent, I just need to actually move out to be completely independent.

I have dreams of living independently, but I don't know if that will ever be a reality. I am very dependent on my parents--moreso than I have ever realized. Before just a couple months ago, I never considered myself to have a disability. Now I am beginning to see how different I am from other people my age. I really don't think I can handle living on my own....
