right now I've got these god awful noisy children living next to me. their parents do NOTHING to control them. I've had to call the police several times on them for banging around loudly in the house next to mine. i can literally hear them slam things about and run back and forth in their house while i'm in my house. most of the times I've called the police is when they're doing this after 10pm (it sometimes goes on after midnight!). yesterday they kept banging around so much during the day that it took me 4-5 hours just to fill out a stupid application. i can't speak to them as i tried that once and they said they didn't speak English. i've asked the police to speak to them since some of them know Spanish. they also do this thing where they kick a ball back and forth until they either kick it into my yard or my house. it becomes very annoying very quickly to listen to the thud of that damn ball each time it's kicked.

i don't know what to do at this point. it's bad enough that i have these people driving by bassing all the time in this ghetto crap hole i live in. but these damn kids will bang around ALL damn day. i can't function with that going on. i can't use ear plugs any longer as they hurt my ears (although i will be trying some full customs if i can get the money. maybe that will work.). i'm tired of being forced into a situation where all i can do is sit here staring at the wall or attempting to watch some stupid TV show simply because i can't get enough quiet to concentrate and think.

and why is it that the children on the left side of my house have no need for this noisy behavior, but the children on the right side do?

any suggestions?

oh, that's another thing. the sides of my head are rather sensitive so i can't wear them for very long. also, i can hear these bastard kids over my in ear monitors at times, so noise cancelling headphones aren't likely to do much.

I just go to the quietest place in my home and turn on my iPod Touch full blast. But that's just me, and I'm a 15 year old girl.

Annoy them back! When they experience what you are going through they will shut up

My dad works for the railroad and uses earplugs on the job. He brings some home for me. They're awesome.

But during the 99% of the time that I'm not wearing them, what do I do about noise? Get incredibly nauseated and pissed off about it.

Do the police actually do anything? Our police will only act if there is a crime, or risk of a crime (including breach of the peace), so it has to be very wild for them to bother even coming over. They did arrest 12 people the last time, about 2 years ago, and took 2 of them to hospital with stab injuries - I held my phone against the wall so the emergency operator could listen to the fighting.

I have called the local EPA about similar issues, and the local council. Both will act against consistent antisocial noise. There is a tenancy board that can warn a landlord about antisocial letting. Either way, it is a bit like going to court and causes immense bad feeling in the meantime.

Like the other answers, noise-cancelling headphones give some respite, and changing routine to be away from the noisiest spots when it is noisy. Going to the library or shopping can get you out when it is noisy, even if it is an unusual time to go.
