I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum, but I thought it was slightly related to autism.

Anyway, a while back, this girl and I were in Rabbinics class, doing work and such (I think we had a short break at the time this took place) and she said my voice sounded different. Her dialogue went something like this:

"You voice sounds different, I don't know how to describe it, not lost but, just, I dunno." I wondered if the difference in my voice was due to my autism.

Completely irrelevant thing here: someone told me I have an accent (I live in the states).

Hey, I know what you mean. Sometimes my tone changes and I don't realize it. A lot of the time my tone is passive and seems lethargic, except when I'm talking about something I'm interested in. My tone changes, I talk faster, I feel like a great Orator when talking about the things I love.

What other symptoms do you have, if you don't mind me asking?

I felt really self-conscious when she said that. Also, I didn't get along with her, so she would be ready to point of differences in me.

Maybe she's just being mean or something. Some people just like to mess with others.

I've received unsolicited reviews of my speaking voice that ranged from "strange" and "horrible" to "beautiful" and "soothing."

Having a monotone voice or odd prosody is a hallmark of AS. I have also seen numerous threads on here by people who didn't pick up their own regional accent, to the point that they get asked "Where are you from?" (this has happened to me.)

I feel that my voice is different, but others don't seem to think so.

My experience is similar. I feel embarrassed when somebody asks me why I sound lively one day and lethargic or monotone the other day. I don't see the change in my mood. Perhaps, when I'm excited about something (new girlfriend or talking about topics I like) I do better to make my voice sound livelier, but when the excitement is gone my voice recedes to the normal more monotone state.

To the topic, I see my voice is different, I thought it was related to my general speech problems like stutter, bad articulation etc., maybe not only.

I have a ridiculously deep voice and I usually talk really slow. When I hear myself talk I sound normal, but occasionally when I hear a recording of myself I can hardly believe it's me.

The other day I made this. Sometimes people just start laughing at me while I'm talking, now I know why. When I played it back through the computer I thought it was hilarious. I sound like a total idiot.

I don't know, it's kinda monotoneish, but you can really hear the WTF!?!? in my voice as I'm saying the words. I've never laughed at myself quite like that before.

I sound like Mick Avory. Take my word for it. My parents acted very strange about my accent, the summer that I was 12.

I was told that my voice changes when I'm in the middle of speaking. That sounds utterly strange to me, but when I asked others about it, they said the same.

Yes my voice changes depending on who I speak to. Infact my parent's threatened to send me to a psychologist when I was 12 because I started using an Irish accent when speaking to a classmate at school.

My voice changes depending on my emotion, gender of person, accent of person and education. I tend to break into a rounded vowels when speaking to a trades-person or cleaner and something close to a British accent when speaking to university professor.
