This is the first thread I have started so please be gentle....

Sorry about the unimaginative title but I was wondering whether anyone else finds that they need the tv voulme lower than other people. Usually it's just me watching it on my lonesome but when we do all watch together it tends to cause a bit of tension. Sometimes I even go into the other room because I can't bear the noise of the tv when it's at a volume that others seem to be comfortable with. Especially films, it seems to be that the way they make them the volume of the music and sound effects are so loud and the talking is quieter so my folks say they have to have it louder to be able to hear the dialogue. The thing is I find that if it's too loud I don't actually hear what is being said because I can't concentrate and my mind is just thinking "too loud, too loud". I get overwhelmed with it easily especially if there's something on which is quite emotive.

Also when I can choose the volume I seem to have to start off with it pretty quiet and then it's like I get acclimatised to the noise a bit and then I can turn it up slightly. I guess this has to do with my sensory issues as all noise is quite a problem for me. Anyway I just wondered whether others found the same.

I'm the same. Everyone always asks 'how can you hear that?' when to me it's loud.

The volume on my TV is actually quite high. Most people at first think that this is because I am hard of hearing, but that is not the case. I am actually SO sensitive to noise, that I am CONSTANTLY distracted my sound stimuli coming from all over the house. I end up not being able to focus on the TV because these sounds seem so loud to me. I have my TV volume on now really high in my room so that I can focus more on the TV I want to watch and less on the surrounding stimuli.

That being said, however, if the TV is the background noise, even the very low volume disturbs me, and I have to shut it off. I hate background noise. If the TV is loud and it is not my TV or my show, I also find that very disturbing as well, and need the volume turned down.

I've got the opposite problem... I have to have the subtitles on all the time because I can barely hear what anyone's saying regardless of the volume level! I'm practically hearing impaired though...

Yes, same. TV hurts my ears at the volume most people watch it. Movie theaters are even worse! I don't see how other people can sit there laughing and enjoying the movie when the sound is enough to destroy your eardrums almost.

I used to have it quieter than most people, but now it seems I have it louder than most people, how strange!

Yes I'm the same way, and more than that ... if I'm at someone's house and they leave the television on during the commercials, it drives me nuts. I want to grab the remote and pound the "mute" button through the floor.

I'f everyone is sleeping and its night I can use very low volume, if its day and everyone keep making noise I have to keep it enough high volume so I can't hear background noise anymore.. I hate the background noise.

That's me!! !! Ask my husband, 8O.

Another thing is the difference between the noise level of the programmes and the advertisement breaks.
Oh. I hate ad-breaks, they have me hanging from the ceiling by my finger nails sometimes....

That's funny ... I used to watch TV with the sound muted all the time. I don't anymore cause I got rid of the TV itself .. lol

Interesting thread! I rarely watch any television - in fact my set still uses 1950s technology (no HD) - but when I'm somewhere watching with others, the loudness wears me out. I love watching with subtitles, too, as I don't want to increase the volume to compensate for the inevitable "mumble" or garble, yet still be able to follow everything.

I don't really watch television but my parents like to. Whenever I go into a room with a TV on I always either turn it down or off. "Hey! I was watching that!" is a phrase that seems like it is part of my daily morning routine when I go in the kitchen and turn down/off the TV. It is usually my mom who has the TV on in the morning and she is never actually in the kitchen watching it... its just a waste of energy and makes me feel like I have a hang over in the morning. Why is there even a TV in the kitchen to begin with!

I just can't stand the way most people talk on TV and radio, I feel like they are yelling. NPR is pretty much the one exception (and not always) where I feel like the people are actually just kind of talking in a calm voice. TV/radio is just too damn excitable sounding for how boring most of it really is.

to me; it's quite hard to have the tv (or any other sound-producing thing; also mp3 players, computers, radios...) at a comfortable level; they usually are set in 6-8% increments; and i'd want the volume at 3%, or 0.5/12...
