do people think you cant do anything. it feels like people think that for me. i dont know why...but people always try to help me and i dont even need help. like today i was holding something and then my friend took it and didnt let me...she said its to heavy for me...but its not. and in school my teachers always ask some kid to help me with my work any time we get work or the aid will stand next to me and help me with it. when i take tests they give me really really easy hints. when there watching a video or playing a game or doing something alot of times people tell me to go away and i cant do it. or ill be cutting food or something and someone tells me to stop because i cant cut my food....

this happens everyday almost...

My aunt and uncle treated me like that but my mom was the opposite and thought I could do absolutely anything I set my mind to. Truth was, there were some things I could do and some things I needed help with. I needed people who took the middle road with me, not doing everything for me or nothing at all.

I can't clap my hands together in time to music.

I've been three rounds in a boxing ring. I can more or less understnd quantum approaches to neuroscience, so why can't I clap my hands together like a three year old listening to tune ?

I can't find the answer I want to this question by asking another question.

I can't find the how to use a spell checker on a PC either.

Nothing to be ashamed of whatsoever. That's what you call having an uneven profile of abilities, which is part and parcel of being on the autistic spectrum.

Over the years I’ve heard plenty of these:

1. “Can’t you do anything right?”

2. “Here, let me ____, you’ll just ____.”

I think that part of the reason my parents keep letting me live with them at age 27 is that they think I'm too incompetent to have a life of my own.

No. I am actually the opposite. I am known for doing everything myself.

Sometimes. There was this aid I had in middle school and she kept asking me if I needed help and I didn't. She got defense when I said that I didn't. She seemed to "get it" in about a week.

I tend to get that "resistance" from anyone when I say I'm going to do something (Succesfully running a business, having a girlfriend, make a million dollars, etc.) and it seems implied in the way others tend to treat me.

I don't know if it's related to AS but I mostly think such naysayers are shortsighted and other doubters of my ability are presuming far too much. In other words, my ability seems to be severely and frequently underestimated.

The assumption of incompetence? Yeah. I've gotten that. It's infuriating.

Of course, I also get the opposite--the assumption of competence. I.e., "You're so smart; you must be able to do X easily," where X is something I really, really suck at doing. And then when I can't do it, it's put down to laziness.

Don't know which is worse. Would be nice if people didn't assume things about what you could do.

My mom is kinda like that. She's always reminding me to do things, what's funny is that it's almost always while I'm doing it.

I've been referred to as "half a person" by a lot of family/friends, because most tasks will take me more than twice as long to complete as an NT. The problem is that I avoid problems, so I am very slow at tasks where mistakes cannot be completely avoided. Then when I try to work fast, people will complain that I am making too many mistakes, which is very confusing to me. I think most people with autism have trouble doing things in moderation.

Total opposite of you. I get annoyed if people don't clap in time.
