I know they were really trying to just protray the "nerd" sterotype", but it seems they got the ultimate sterotype of AS here in this cartoon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNJ6dFwh ... re=related

It got me thinking about something. Whenever we go on about our special intrests, we are told such things like "you really need to widen your horizons" but basicaly what they are trying to say is that we need to get a life. Why can't they understand that our special intrests are our lives?

I'm not like that ... I don't have speical intrests. I can get obbsesions but I stop them, and not annoy my NT family and friends with it. By obbsesions I mean cartoons

I hate when people say get a life, it's one of my pet peeves. What they really mean is 'get my life'.

For most people, a “life” is getting up at 5AM every day so they can go to the job they hate and kiss up to the boss so they can get the next paycheck, then come home and get drunk on cheap beer while watching Two and a Half Man, but not too drunk because they have to be in bed by ten. And maybe on Friday or Saturday night they’ll try to have some fun by going to a lousy dance club with the friends they only see once a week and try to get laid. I’m supposed to feel like more of a loser than them?

Everybody's interests are what they are.

What business is of anyone else's to say how narrow or broad anyone else's "horizons" ought to be?

None.

Ever read any success books? Almost all of them stress the importance of "focusing like a laser" on one single goal. Most disagree entirely with the concept of never putting one's eggs in a single basket. Most will tell you that's exactly what you should do.

I have ADD as well as AS, and narrowing my horizons is what I need to learn to do. Broadening them would only make matters worse for me.

I'm already spread about as thin as the Gulf oil spill.

Haven't they read Adam Smith (the most famous economist of all)? The wealth of nations is based on SPECIALIZATION. The ability to focus is what creates progress. We need more of it, not less.

Every time I hear the words "get a life" I want to seriously hurt the person who said it.

Saying "Get a Life" only makes sense when talking to zombies or vampires.

"get a life" = "be boring like everyone else whether you like it or not"

Me too.
If someone really gets on my nerves with repeating "Get a life" I just highlight the "best" aspects of his/her life and ask if that's what I should be aiming at. Usually it shuts people up.

It's great if other people like having very varied interests, but honestly, it's so much more useful to me to know lots about a few things! If someone says "get a life/widen your horizons" etc, I always want to ask them how much THEY know about THEIR interest and how far that's gonna' get them...

I'm pretty sure 'get a life' just means 'you're bothering me so go do something else'.
