Ive been Dianoised with AS at the age 9-10, and back then it would have seemed that my special interrest was computer games, I had an obsession with role playing games, I play for as many hours a day as I could, but I barly do that anymore, and when I am in the slowly becoming uncommon mood to play, I dont play exreamly obsessivly, just the normal nerd hours of 2-10 hours. Maby im growing out of it? Can one grow out of a special interrest? or maby im learning to control myself subconciously, im not sure...

and just out of curiosity, can one have AS and no special interrest? can a special interrest not be discovered for a long time? what are all your thoughts on this.

You don't necessarily need one to be aspie, but a lot of us do. My interests jump around all the time, I don't really have one set thing that I'm extremely passionate about, so you aren't alone.

Thats cool, that im not alone on that I mean...

I feel like im somekind of partical aspie, although when I was younger I had alot of AS traits, this would probably be the 'growing out' effect? I feel its just I was able to use reason to learn myself some facial expressions, understanding empathy by really concentating on the whole concept and reasoning, for example, I would think to myself, "it would be very unlikley that im the only person, and everyone are just automations." I never really thought I was the only one before, but just that simple thought got me started on immagining different life experiences and personalities.

I actually tried really hard to sociallise, getting in alot of embarrassment and hurt has taught me alot, and dispite my lowering self esteem I never really gave up.

But I still go on about one topic alot... like such.

Yeah I agree! My obsessions are more like 'phases' than anything. They range from learning (and memorizing/committing to permenent memory) all the chords/lyrics to every song by a particular band, to spending hours stringing beads, to certain foods that become my exclusive diet...all over the place!

This sounds a lot like myself. I have facial expressions, I understand some empathy (but in the end it is based in logic). :) I think that everyone has a different experience with AS, even if it's just a little different.

When I am depressed I don't do my special interests as much. I lose interest in them. One of them is drawing and gaming on my computer and right now I don't care about it. Normally when I am doing well, I play games for many hours and same with art. Also building model airplanes. The only remaining interests I have when depressed is psychology (only because it affects me) and current events (news).

I am in that position myself.
It was SecondLife for several years. Then it was the person who is now my boyfriend.
And since he became my boyfriend, I have not had another 'focus' replace that. (it sounds really bad that my boyfriend was a special interest as he is much more than that).

I really feel lost without having an intense focus.
My happiest times were when I was totally interested in Harry Potter, or Doctor Who, and could lose myself in them.
Music is the only interest that has remained lifelong for me, but I don't know if it counts, just because I play the same songs over and over through the years. I know thousands of lyrics by heart.

Also, I find my interests change over time, and I may go awhile without a special interest if I've run out of one interest and haven't replaced it yet. This especially happens with TV shows, once I've watched every episode.

I still have interests, but I haven't had a "special" interest in quite some time now. Unless, of course, you count this website as an interest.

My special interests tend to change every few months, so I've gathered enough of them to seem like I don't have one in particular.
However, I've been obsessed with Street Fighter as of late, and hearing the cicadas outside reminded me of how much I obsessed over them in the past. I still do, really.

Mine constantly jump around. I try to focus on cars considering it's my job, but sometimes I lose interest in that as well. Sometimes I can't stop thinking about them, other times I just want them to go away. lol Overall it's a rhythmic cycle of obsession.

I go through lots of different phases too. The only one that really remains constant is my interest in writing, fine art & history.

Aspie obsessions can change over the years. Mine has never lasted more than ten years. They would typically last a year or a few months and then I move onto something else. But the longest has been autism and Benny & Joon and Spokane. London and 101 Dalmatians are the third longest. I was obsessed with video games too but that stuff is considered normal, even if you play them for hours and hours so I can imagine it being difficult for an aspie to get diagnosed if that was their obsession because it be seen as normal by the doctor. But unless they have other obsessions too or past obsessions they have had, then maybe not.

I practice my interests by different degrees of intensity over the time. Such interest are physics, astronomy, tweaking audio equipments, record and audio equipment collecting, language learning, computer programming. And there are interests that are newly found or faded away completely. AS is a new one for instance, while my interest in radio DX-ing seems to have gone completely with the dawn of digital age in telecommunication. Music is almost a constant interest to me, I also tend to listen to a limited number of albums and titles, although I have a pretty large collection.

A thing that I have some difficult in understandig about "special interests": if we can have several special interests at the same time, if these interests can change in weeks, and if they can be some very broad topic (like "science" or "history"), what exactly made these interests "restricted, repetitive and stereotyped"? if anything, I bet that many NT people have much more restricted interests (look to the typical NT male who spends most of the day watching sport competitions on TV).
