If you went to an SSI interview, did you go to the doctor first. When I finally get up the courage to go I just want to know if it would make much difference if going to a doctor beforehand would help.

It helps to have a medical history to back up your disability, but SSA will also have their doctors examine you. The latter can sometimes be problematic as well, however.

My suggestion would be to go to your state's services department, whatever it's called, where you apply for food stamps and the like? They'll probably have some means of assisting you. Or contact SSA directly and ask them what the process is.

I don't really have much more advice than that.

This blog is mostly geared toward SSDI applications, but when you apply for disability you typically apply for both SSDI and SSI at the same time, and the process is the same for both - just the qualifications are different.

It's helpful to follow the directions on the website - it does expidite things - at least in our local office it does...

SSA - SSI Adult Application page

If you call and make the appointment first, and then fill out the application on line - it seems to go fast, gets all your paperwork in order and, hopefully expedite your process. Good luck!

I wasn't interviewed and I didn't see one of their doctors. It's probably because with my diagnosis, I have a very extensive history, going back to my childhood troubles and I had a former boss and my therapist, etc... write letters about me and send them in.

The more documentation, probably the better.

I am in the beginning stages of applying for SSI & I'm already freaking out. I have some questions that are about my sketchy past but am afraid to ask them on here for fear of being ostracized. I will see my therapist again soon but she doesn't seem to have dealt with this before so I don't think she'd know the answers.
