Speech Delay at a Young Age?

I have not been officially diagnosed with aspergers, but a psychologist told me that people with autism typically have speech delays at a young age. I never had speech delays. Quite the opposite, in fact. I was very much ahead in terms of speech. Does this mean that I for sure am not an aspie? I had plenty of other aspie-like behaviors, though, such as tactile issues. And, in addition, I display every other symptom of aspergers in the extreme.

I definitely talked early. I was speaking very fluently at the age of two.

Why did the psychologist tell me that autistics have speech delays?

One of the differences they look at when comparing HFA and AS is when you began speaking. For AS, at least in some versions of diagnostics, a lack of speech delay is necessary.

I'm an aspie and I started talking at 8 months.

Generally speaking people with an autism diagnosis had a speech delay and people with an AS diagnosis didn't. I was pretty on time with my speech apparently but it was odd to say the least.

My son was diagnosed with Asperger's despite the fact that he had a significant speech delay and his performance scores outweighed his verbal ones. They said they decided that because of his receptive language skills.

It was the same case with me. I had a speech delay but apparently not a delay in understanding language.

People who think HFA and Aspergers are different conditions generally think that HFA have early speech delay and AS don't. However, research has found that whether or not you had language delays as a kid makes little difference to later development.

I talked about on time (12 and half months), but I learned to speak really fast, my parent's recorded my second birthday on tape and I'm talking pretty fluently, in full sentences and everything.

I skipped the stage of saying "mama" or "dada" at an early age, I just went to straight to saying "mommy" and "daddy", at one year.

People with autism always have some delay in social communication (this is quite often in the form of a speech/language delay, but doesn't absolutely have to be).

People with aspergers cannot, according to the DSM-IV, have a speech delay.

Is you psych qualified to diagnose ASDs--seems to me that he should know this already if he is. I think you should discuss with him that you are not wondering about classic autism, but about aspergers, and ask him if there are other reasons why he is not officially diagnosing you. If he is not qualified to diagnose ASDs, even if he seriously thinks you have one, he cannot officially give you the diagnosis so you should look into that too.

People with classic autism do. Not people with AS. Maybe he wasn't including AS.

Well, that's the thing. I was wondering about asperger's, not autism. It's almost as if she was trying to confuse me.

i for one did have a speech delay when young, classic autism? if that's what you want to call it.
when i was around 4 years old i had a speech touter come by for awhile. my parents have these crazy stories about the troubles of the time. at that age i spilt my tongue on a tree swing and that carried the speech delay even further down road...
