Does anyone else hate it when people are not clearly in or out but kind of hover?

I have very different feelings and behaviour when I'm on my own from when I'm with people. So I need to know, is this a people situation now or a solitary one? Having to chop and change is really tiring.

My boyfriend complains about me wanting to know what he's planning and not just letting him come and go. But if he is wandering in and out I can't do anything - I can't interact with him OR be on my own. I just sit there getting nervous!

Suppose we are chatting together and then he suddenly decides to go away. He is always deciding things like that, just going away without any notice. So I feel a negative emotion because of the sudden change. I feel clingy, I don't want him to go. But then once he's gone I switch into solitary mode and am quite happy. Then if he comes back in 5 mins later I feel angry at him for breaking the solitude. Switching back and forth ensures I can't fully enjoy either.

This sounds like a textbook example of compromise in a relationship.

He makes an earnest effort to give you a heads-up about his actions, you make an earnest effort to accept his spontaneity to the best of your ability.

This is definitely a problem that can get better if both parties are willing to make the effort.

Yes, I can understand completely. My husband will be in the same room, say something to me, then not say anything for a few minutes, so I get back to doing something, then he says something else, disrupting me, and the pattern follows. Or, he'll be talking to me, then get up and leave and I sit wondering if he's coming back or not. I actually do the same to him. I'll think we were finished and get up to leave and he'll be waiting for me to come back when I don't.

Finding a workable solution wasn't hard. It was a matter of communicating the problem. Good luck.

Yes! This drives me nuts. But my mother does it compulsively, she's a bully who refuses to let me set boundaries. So I can't work out a compromise. It makes me awfully impatient to move out.

I hate it when my parents just walk right on in to my room and start talking to me about something while they just stand there and look around like something is wrong. It's happened 6 times in the past 30 minutes and I'm really starting to get pissed off.

People rushing in and out of a room agitates me, especially if my mum does it. I am close to my mum, and I am always constantly gabbling away to her about my anxieties, special interests, other people, or just things in general. But when she keeps getting up and going out of the room, I always find myself getting up too and following her out of the room too. I hate it when she goes out into the garden, because the neighbours can see right into our garden and I don't like them seeing me follow my mum around. It's something I just like to do in the house.
