Does anybody here have trouble understanding written material? I'm personally very good at reasoning and understanding complicated concepts, but when it comes to decoding written material I completely fail at it.

This happens to me, particularly in long walls of texts that arn't using proper paragraphing, which is why I don't reply to long forum posts, which seem to be universaily written by newbs. You know the ones I mean, those huge walls of text detailing the persons every little quirk while finishing with "so do I have it?" or, alternitively "what do?".

phonic.

i can understand written material much better than i can understand unwritten material.

example:

a) i am given a piece of paper with the steps to perform a task printed on it. i read it and follow the steps.

b) i am given a piece of paper which is blank. what do i do with it? do i throw it away or do i write on it myself some time later? either way , the underlying task that the blank sheet directs me how to perform, will not be understood by me if it is blank.

I would generally prefer to have something explained to me in writing than orally. I don't know whether this is because people generally explain things better/more thoroughly when they're forced to write it down or because I can assimilate the information better. I don't generally have problems remembering what's said to me either - the only exception is group discussions where I generally have to pay very close attention to what each individual is saying and have trouble following two separate trains of thought at once (but I think that's probably harder for everyone).

Some people here have posts that are ten miles long. That can be a huge problem for me, as it takes forever to know how to reply.

Depends on how it's written. If it's in laymen terms (but with proper grammar, of course) understanding what I read is no problem. If it's not, I can usually make sense of it, albeit with significant effort.

I have much less difficulty understanding written material than I have understanding speech.....but I sometimes have trouble with written material, too. It depends on:

1) What the writing is about; If it's about something abstract, I'll have trouble understanding it.

2) How it's written; I think I have some problems understanding syntax, and it can be hard for me to connect individual points/sentences to others in the same paragraph (or the same page, section, etc....this seems to be a "parts to whole" issue, and might have something to do with my working memory deficits).
