I certainly don't feel empty. I feel too full most of the time.

That sounds like depression.

I've felt like that a few times. It is generally referred to as depression.

It will either pass on its own or you might want to find someone to talk to about it. Perhaps even some meds if things really go downhill.

Agreed. That sounds like depression to me too.

That can be one side of an ASD or just life that can come with feeling unable to cope. Although w/ ASDs I'd expect more issues w/ being overwhelmed leading a person to shut down.

Every thoughtful person that has ever lived has had occasion to wonder, what's it all about? Why am I here? Today I'm alive and tomorrow I'll be dead; what does any of it matter? It's our fate and our job as human beings to wrestle with such questions, and seek a philosophical framework which gives us a basis to continue.

If it makes you feel any better, the greatest of artists and writers and other influential people have found themselves in the same place. I mention the artists and writers, not because they're better than us, but because they've set down their struggle in their art, that the rest of us may share and possibly learn. One example, one of many, but I'm particularly touched by this, is Tolstoy's essay, "A Confession". Here he speaks of his personal emotional/mental crisis, which brought him almost to the point of suicide. It's available on the Internet and in books. This is the Tolstoy that wrote "War and Peace"; one of the greatest books ever written.

Anyway, I wouldn't think this is an aspie thing, although the aspie manifestation may have its own twists.

On balance, I feel fine. Sure I encounter melancholy from time to time but I am not besieged by it. I think your outlook might be the result of a hormonal or chemical imbalance, not AS. Though obviously I am not a doctor. If it's really bothering you I'd recommend finding a reputable mental health professional in your area and seeking treatment.

"Dunkel ist das Leben; ist der Tod"

- "Dark is Life; Dark is Death"

- Lyrics of Mahler's symphony "The Song of The Earth"

As compared to normal human existence, you're right ofcourse, although I'm not sure how you're using the word 'dark' unless you're referring to our minds' lack of illumination of social situations.

I was going to say 'existence itself is sad, dark and empty', but that makes me sound mega emo.

I feel the same way but I have lifelong depression. I put it down to that, rather than AS.

*awkward hugs*

Well Mahler was the emo of the classical composers, lol. I wasn't depressed as a child, but only cos I thought life would get more interesting once I hit my teens - It did in some ways ofc tho. I do suspsect that to avoid depression as an aspie you have to have a compatible outlook - I.e. I suspect that a happy aspie is one with no interest in people or socialising, but who gets off instead on PC circuitboards or the like. Comments welcome, as I'd like to be wrong! I also read 'a placid temperament' is needed to thrive with AS - Basically, to have alexithymia, schizoid Personality Disorder, and an ISTP/J Myers-Briggs Personality Profile along with the AS I guess. How meaningful a life that can be is anyone's guess.

^lol

If you feel sad, remember that pretty much everyone on this forum with ASD has felt what you felt at some time or another. Maybe even every NT. If you feel your life is empty, it's your job to fill it.
