Does anyone else have issues deciding how to sign off on cards and letters? I really hate using "love" because to me that is a really strong and intimate emotion, but it seems to be the standard on the birthday cards that go around at work.

I spend ages worrying about what the word I choose will mean, but from what I can see no one else actually pays any attention to it at all. I can spend hours agonizing over a birthday card, just to end up with "Happy Birthday, from EllenDee". I guess stand-offish and impersonal is just safer than trying to express my real feelings :(

I always sign cards with my left hand, so that it looks like I can't write.

I just sign off with "Max respect," or "Take it easy,"
Second-guessing what my words will mean to the people I write to seems like a fool's errand.
The people who would misunderstand me are not worth writing to in the first place.

I put "Love Always" on cards to my closer family members and my best friend. Other than that, I would sign usually sign it "Best Wishes" or "Wishing you a Happy Birthday (or Merry Christimas, etc), Lily"

I should add that it took me a LONG time to be comfortable using "Love Always" even for people that I love a lot. When I was a kid I just used to put "From"

I'm a fan of 'sincerely' and 'regards'. If it's an ambiguous situation I lean on the formal side.

I don't know what to put on cards. Usually I just say something about them like "you're a good teacher". The last card I signed was for my English teacher, and that was what I wrote. I also hate signing yearbooks because I don't know what I should write. "Have a great summer!" is a meaningless and overused sentence, "Thanks for being a great friend!" is okay if the individual is a good friend, but if someone I don't know well asks me to sign a yearbook, I usually just come up with something creative and funny.

I always have issues with that too. I don't want to say "Love," because what if I don't love them? so I usually sign it off as "sincerely". I don't know its true definition, but it sounds great for me! :-D

I use sincerely for formal letters. In emails I just usually say "Take care, Lily". For cards I would never use either of these though.

I've a church officer I like and respect who signs her emails 'Love'. I just can't say that in return, so I use something like 'best wishes' in my replies. I wonder if she notices, and what she thinks?

This has always been an odd one for me too. I tend to write 'Enjoy'. That seems to fit every situation.

Oh, as far as letters it's 'Sincerely,'

..because otherwise they might think I'm lying, or uhh.. I dunno. It's convention, and it's basically neutral

I sign cards with my signature picture - a smiling cat, not with my name. I've been doing that for 20 years. No "love", "truly" or anything else, just the little picture. Occasionally I put a couple of spare stickers on the cards.

Back in China I used one of my seals to stamp at the bottom of letters and cards. I wish it's still common practice.

For acquaintances I put a "-" and my name, and depending on how much I like them, occasionally, a happy face.
For close people, I just draw a really crappy looking heart.

i dont use love for the same reason. its an intense emotive term, far too personal and untrue for everyone i think. i usually just sign my name or write from, have a good week, see you or whatever.
