Okay, Asperger's - it really sounds a lot like ass burger. I don't find it funny. Some people do. Some people also think it gets funnier every time you make a joke about it. Anyone else getting this? How do you handle it?

You can pronounce it different. According to an earlier thread, the correct pronunciation is:
As-
per (rhymes with near)
ger (rhymes with bird).
Not so easy to joke about.

Otherwise you could just roll your eyes when they laugh, showing that you consider it childish.

My girlfriend's the one with the issue. She's worked out this whole mental image involving my ass and a cheeseburger (really, she has) and giggles about it every time we try to seriously discuss it. It irks me enough that I don't even want to approach the topic anymore, and I've told her repeatedly that it's really not funny more than once.

Maybe you should tell her that giggling is for when she's with her girlfriends, and you're trying to be serious now.

Use some other words, aspie, AS, autism.

Or find a more understanding girlfriend.

I'm sorry but I do find it funny and have made jokes about it too. sometimes I like to call it Ass-boogers.

It's not the pronunciation but the fact that your girlfriend is relentless about the "joke". She may think it's really funny because she is insensitive. Or she may be laughing in a nervous fit because she is uncomfortable and/or unfamiliar with the subject. If she is unwilling to stop joking about it, maybe she is just too immature to talk to.

For the record, "assburgers" is really funny-but not enough to stop a conversation. I pronounce it, "ass-purghers"

When I was younger, kids use to call Alzheimer's "Old Timers'".

Autistic is more well known in popular culture, but its connotation is that of a more severe condition--as portrayed in the movie Rain Main--even though Asperger's is technically on the autism spectrum. I like the sound of the word autistic, but it's the connotation that is keeping me from using it.

The one "friend" I discussed this with ,also made the joke and says it that way if I broach the topic....I have switched to calling it AS and that seems more effective....I really dont think he meant to be rude it is more like a brain "fart" he hears the unfamiliar term and his brain is trying to process it and comes up with the Ass buerger image.......just switch to AS and aspie and I think this will help her hear what your are actually saying instead of fighting the image of burgers in her head...

The above pronunciation is the German pronunciation... technically correct but most Americans use the anglicized version, which does unfortunately sound like "ass burgers".

Maybe I should go back in time and ask Mr. Asperger to change his name to something less embarassing...
