I'm a little more into the autism spectrum than Aspies. I didn't realize it until I did some research, but I found out all those test that my parents gave me were for autism. I'm now 65 and have mostly grown out of it, though autism comes back to haunt me in a big way once in a while. It's really hard being an autistic adult, but I have been able to live on my own and hold down a job, though there was always problems in the workplace for me because I didn't know how to communicate and other things. But, now I'm retired, I've been able to deal with autism quite well.

One of the biggest problems I have to deal with is hearing sounds that cause me great stress, sounds that most people can't even hear. Many sounds is amplified in my ears and sometimes I really get out of it. My TV even irritates me if it's too loud. And at the level I listen to it, most people would be hard press to even hear what people are saying.

Hello. I am also further into the spectrum and I too have severe hearing issues. :)

Apparently I can smell things that other people can't. I have a hard time believe that though. Sometimes I just think everyone's lying to me!

I know your statement is to be true, because I also have an accute sense of smell. But the reason I didn't bring it up, I hardly come across a an odor or fragrance that a hate, therefore most smells don't cause me stress. Yes, I'm able to smell certain odors and fragrances that most can't. :)

Oh good, so I'm not the only person around with a dog nose.

Used to be able to smell my mom's curry from 50 metres below the apartment where we used to stay. Nowadays my range has decreased a lot more, since the allergic rhinitis that came along with the ridiculous nose sensitivity caused enough long term sneezing to probably desensitise them to a more normal level. Still, I can differentiate smells that most people can't, and I can find out what food is in a sealed container by just smelling the surface, which seems to impress my mom.

Usually people talk more about hearing, sight and touch, but smell hypersensitivity... glad to know I'm not alone on this one.

And hi, BTW.
