I have tried everything: anti-anixiety, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics. They only seem to work at first, if at all. Anyone have good experience with meds and stims?? It's a almost like they have transcended from stim to habit. I was considering hypnosis, anyone have experience with that? Thanks.

Why do you want to stop stimming? It's probably giving you sensory stimulation that you need to self-regulate. Lots of people find they can cope with overload and such better if they stim.

Perhaps one of the stimulants used to treat ADHD would help you to stop stimming (Adderall XR, Concerta, Daytrana Patch, etc). However, most of the stimulants used to treat ADHD only provide symptom relief for 8-12 hours, so depending on how long you wish to be stim-free, you may need to take two pills a day (or get a prescription for the Daytrana patch and keep it on all day - that's how I remain stim-free all day most days).

If your stims are interfering with your life, then is there a reason you don't work on changing your stims instead of trying to remove them? Changing your stims is apparently possible, and allows you to still cope better.

Here are a few reasons:

I'm tired of feeling like a freak in public
I'm tired of grinding my teeth down from the constant chewing of my mouth
I'm tired of the headaches caused by the chewing
I would like to be able to sit still for once in my life

The list goes on and on. To me it's not a question of why would I want to stop stims, but rather why wouldn't I want to stop?

Trust me, they make them worse. I don't mind a little bit of stimming though so it's alright. It's turned into a little impatient dance.

OP, we stim so we can feel at ease with our environment. Without them I guarantee you that you'd be under so much more stress. It happens to me sometimes and I just think 'if I was stimming I'd be alright.' And I was right.

Also, you can change your stim to a less painful one. But I don't think teeth grinding is a stim. That's a symptom of severe stress.

If people would suddenly just decide to stop wanting to be normal they would enjoy their lives a bit more.

For some autistics, stimulants do indeed make stimming worse and/or more noticeable. However, that does not mean that every autistic is going to have a bad response to stimulants. Stimulants have helped me to control my stimming in public better than I could without them so as not to do stuff that others would consider "weird". Look, I'm not trying to be "normal", nor do I plan to conform to soceity at large.
