I'm pretty sure that this is a typical Aspie thing, but I like to hear from other people that this happened to.

I've got a clinically measured I.Q. of 139, but I nearly failed almost every grade in school. I never finished college and some classes I got A's and B's in, some D's and F's, but rarely C's. Some projects in a single class I would get an A+ on and others I would fail because I never finished them.

I just wanted to hear some other people's stories and thoughts.

Same here. I wonder if Aspies would do better taking online classes?

A lot of times I would get so caught up listening to music, I wouldn't get stuff done. Being with all those people stressed me and music and dancing was my escape.

Sometimes I had a difficult time sitting down and studying.

I could never muster the motivation to do homework or stay awake in class. As a result I performed sub-average in many classes while excelling in classes for which I had some affinity without doing any actual work. I eventually dropped out due to my parents getting divorced which caused some major changes in my life and school just got too much, I didn't even write anything down on my final exams except my name.

The social aspect was a bust, but otherwise I did well in school because the rules were simple and if you followed them you were rewarded. At that point in my life I was also motivated to please, believing that by some stroke of bad luck I was temporarily surrounded by unresponsive people, but that situation would change when I moved out into the "real" world. (It didn't, of course.)

Didn't finish school, failed/nearly failed. I'm currently on my way to being part of an autism thing that may help me finish my education.

Mostly due to my stress, lack of interest or motivation and my missing a lot of days I failed most classes or did below average, despite all my teachers and family telling me how smart I am. I suppose i was a chronic underacheiver. I just stopped caring after I missed so many days.

So people are either really good or really bad. No averages--interesting; I wasn't expecting that.

I did really well most of the time. High school was awful because I did not pay attention, was completely out of focus, failed my first class ever, then dropped out largely due to severe depression in grade 12 (2 months before graduation). When I returned several years later for my high school diploma, I graduated with Honours. In university, I have a 3.86 GPA (but would be lower if I was taking all science/math classes) and am going into my fourth year. So, I would say, for most of my life I have done quite well.

Did you go to my school? :) This describes my experience exactly, including the disappointment in the "real" world.

Really? Because this is eactly what I expected.

whenever theres a poll with two extremes and a middle ground we're always in the two extremes, there was a study about it i think. You have all these questions you can say either "always" "never" or "sometimes" and they found NT's usually pick "sometimes" and we always pick either "never" or "always". I think verdandi mentioned it.

I did fairly well, looking back I do not see how....I mean now its even hard to do well in 3 college courses, so how the hell I made it through that first year of college or all those years of public school I do not know. I guess back then I still believed it would get better.

Oh, I must have missed that post. :? Seems like it is accurate though.

All of my report cards said that I am too dependent on the teacher/need to be independent. I still did well, but I often asked for help through every step to make sure it was perfect.

Anbuend mentioned it. I may have referred to anbuend's reference.

As far as this goes: Gifted (tested as gifted), nearly failed many years in school except for one in special ed (where I actually did extremely well) and ultimately dropped out of high school after failing my junior year. And then I took a GED and scored in the 99th percentile.

Kindergarten: Teacher knew I was already ahead of my level, but did not expect me to stay that way.

First grade: Teacher was clueless.

Second grade: Tested for giftedness, and moved to a gifted class for a week before switching schools. Spent the rest of the school year bored out of my mind doing busywork.

Third grade: Tested again for giftedness, but was not able to pass. Most kids passed it in kindergarten and never had to take it again. I was cheated out of the system.

Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade (last years of elementary school): Still never paid much attention, did all my homework in class, received nearly perfect grades on tests with hardly any effort.

seventh grade: My lack of organizational skills screwed me over. I went from making straight A's to straight C's. Life was hell for me because I was paranoid that I had lost my edge.

eighth grade: I learned from my mistakes and went back to making good grades. I liked my teachers more, so that helped too.

ninth grade: Basically a repeat of the seventh, but even more dramatic.

tenth grade: Managed to recover my GPA to something a bit more reasonable.

11th grade (last year): Accepted into the engineering academy and started taking fun classes. First time I've ever actually enjoyed school.

12th grade: A continuation of last year, although now I'm also enrolled in community college.

If I was interested in the subject I'd get very good grades. In high school I got 110% to 120% in many classes.

But if I wasn't interested in the subject I wouldn't be motivated and wouldn't do the work. In middle school and high school I got many D minuses.

Did poorly in school but still made it into the next grade.
I'd only do really well if I was interested in a subject.
Other times, I drew.
