Actually, almost all of the conversations I have are with myself. I have this incessant need to talk everything out aloud. I try to do it only when no-one else is around, but people walk up on me while I'm mumbling to myself all the time. I sometime do it and not even aware that I am doing it. Sometimes, I do it right in front of other people without initially being aware of it. It gets really embarrassing.

Does anybody else have this problem?

Oh I was walking back from town the other day and I dropped my bag of shopping, I started talking to it about it's highly inconsiderate behaviour, only to find I wasn't alone.... I bet the guy behind me must have thought I was a right nutcase.. but there again, he'd be right =)

You are right it can make for very funny situations, but generally they are situations that I would rather not be in.

I've had full-length conversations with myself on Word documents when I was going through something that needed in-depth analyzing. It's surprisingly effective....

I do talk to myself when I'm alone, but there's no proof that NTs don't. But I don't think they're mad enough to have full-blown conversations with themselves like I do. But I don't when I'm out or with other people, or if I'm anywhere within earshot.

Once at school I was trying to talk to one of the other girls in my class, but she chose not to listen and said to me, ''having a conversation with yourself again?''

I thought that was rather offensive.

I talk to myself all the time. I do it more when I am stressed. I need to stop doing it out in the public hehe. I've managed to stop talking out loud in the public but not when I'm stressed out.

Yeah, but is this an Aspie thing? It's almost to the point of interfering with my life, so I'd like to know.

So, what did you think of this thread?

Meh, it's alright. Shall we move on to the next one?

Sure, that's fine with me.

It's not exclusively an aspie thing. I'm pretty sure a lot of NTs do it too. I know my mom does. The reason it's interfering with your life is because you've allowed it to develop into a habit. My suggestion on how to cope with this is that you should start writing in a journal. That's basically the same thing as talking to yourself, only in written form.

I second that piece of advice. I find it also helps with daydreaming, in the sense that my daydreams involve a lot of talking to myself. Now that I write in a journal, I still spend a lot of time lost in my own thoughts, but since I write them down I end up building on the thoughts I have instead of repeating the same conversations over and over in different ways.

I don't consider this a problem at all. If talking to yourself is useful or enjoyable, then go for it!

I generally keep repeating conversations that I had with someone or conversations that I need to have with someone. I keep going over them speaking both sides until I've determined the best possible way to say something. It's helped me understand why a conversation hasn't gone right and kept me from sticking my foot in my mouth a lot. I think it stems from my inability to effectively communicate with other people. As you've seen, I sometimes assume that people will interpret what I've said literally. I have a hard time understanding what people find offensive.

Yep that's why i don't have any friends or a girlfriend :P
what's the purpose of having them if you can't have a proper convo with them right?

i talk to myself all the time, mostly out loud.
sometimes i talk to the people who i look up to.. like Johnny Depp, Steven Spielberg..
