Sometimes I don't even feel like I fit into Aspergers. There is a characteristic I have that I have been trying to figure out how to describe. Perhaps the clearest illustration I can give is that I don't think my brain ever went through puberty, and I don't expect that it ever will. I don't know of any better way to describe it, or even a term to call it. Perhaps there are other Aspergerians that might have this characteristic. I think the only people I have ever met that have it as severely as I do have only been people that are extremely Autistic.

My body language remains pretty much the same as when I was a child. This has caused me a lot of problems from people that disrespect me based on that.

I had a psychaitrist tell me once that teenagers and young adults with AS generally have a mental age of about 2/3 their actual age. It has nothing to do with your IQ, it does not mean you are dumb or incapable of learning. You will mature, believe me, but it won't happen over night. Although the more time you spend with people, the faster you will progress. It's like anything else, practice makes perfect.

My brain definately went through puberty. But I think it's got stuck in puberty, whilst the rest of my body is past puberty, like normal.

I think my mind is around 14.

Xayah... No wonder I mentally feel 17 years old at nearly 26. I've always known that, but didn't know there was an explanation out there connected with it.

As for puberty, I remember that my bodily changes were anything but joyous to me. My 13th birthday was one of the worst days of my life. I wanted to stay a kid. It still feels "right" to me even now.

I know my brain went through puberty. That was when I decided I actually wanted to be normal and hated the way I was all of a sudden. Before that, I never put much thought into it or even cared. Then all of a sudden it was a big deal. I read online that this is actually normal for all kids and all of a sudden they hate their disability when they had accepted it before. Plus my feelings changed too and hormones. But I went through it differently than other teens because of the way I was and the environment. I have no clue where my mind is, people online usually say I am like a 17 year old and even my husband says I am like a teen sometimes because of my attitude. Then he says I am like a child. Even my ex said I was like a 17 year old and then he decided I was more like a 5-8 year old because of my childish interests.

I have an autistic friend who has social skills and emotions of a four-five years old. He probably never went though mental puberty either.

That's what happened to me.

Holy s**t, this is something I've felt my entire life... Every single year, at my birthday, I'd be almost in disbelief about the fact that I'm whatever age I was turning. Right now I'm 25, and I feel like I should be maybe 16 or 17. Also, A LOT of people assume I'm younger, like 20 at the oldest, and I get carded a lot for cigarettes and alcohol. Whenever most people find out I'm 25, they're surprised.

My brain never went through puberty either. My mental age is around 10, 1/3 of my chronological age. Before I knew about autism, I called this disparity "Arrested Development Disorder".

I prefer to try and act my age, at least. Sometimes I seem older.

My counsellor said I remind her more of the incoming students than a 27 year old (which, according to that 2/3 rule mentioned earlier, would put me at about 18). I would say my brain has different ages in different situations. I am very immature for somethings. Sometimes I act like I am 18, sometimes I act like I am 13, and sometimes I act even younger than that. Depends on the situation.

That makes perfect sense! I am seventeen, and I still sleep with my stuffed animals and baby blankies. I feel very close with my mom and dad. I also feel like it's insane that I'm actually in college; I feel like I'm not even ready to be out of elementary school! I also started puberty really early, which made things even more uncomfortable. At ten, I went into denial about having breasts and refused to wear a bra! To this day, I'm not sure if that was because of gender identity issues or me feeling younger than my body.

It's really weird; parts of my brain are really developed, so it's an interesting juxtaposition. A few weeks ago, I was doing my Honors Calculus homework while I played with my stuffed animals and baby blankies with my four-year-old brother.

When I was in high school, I was told my social skills were not good and I had immature emotions. But yet my responsibilities ranged in the late 20's. Parts of me were immature and parts of me were very mature. I even had better understanding of things than most students too about life.

I think with people on the spectrum they range from being ahead of their peers to being behind.

Contentious debate is ongoing over "Geschwind Autism & Puberty" factors during adolescence, and lasting irreversibly after puberty. I have the personality factors of the Geschwind Syndrome from Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, and I have been told I have body-language/olfactory results "recklessly" noted in Geschwind research intersecting autism and brain lateralization during adolescence. Autism seems to be associated with the paradoxical communication noted in literature as the "Tadzio Effect" of being a sought "little boy personality" well into adulthood by would-be Hadrians.
