OK, this makes sense that it may be an Aspie thing, since a lot of NTs do live their lives around conforming. I know a lot of people who would rather look fashionable than to be comfortable, and I think that's silly. I know I follow the obsession (well, I'm not obsessed with looking my best but I don't like standing out too much), but I still get cross with how much pressure it gives and how much energy it takes and what good it really gives us. This is probably why a lot of old people give up on conforming (perhaps that's why I get along well with old people?)

Men aren't as bad as women, but I'm not a man so I don't quite know how their minds work with conforming, but I know how a woman's mind works, and it's annoying. They are forever trying to compete with eachother, not so much with their own friends, but more so with women they don't know. Once I was going on an evening walk with my cousin, and she had skinny jeans on what she had been wearing all day, and she said, ''no, I can't wear my trainers with my skinny jeans on - I look funny. I'd better go and change into another pair of trousers'', and she went off to do it, and I was like, ''but who the hell are we going to meet on an evening in the woods and in fields where nobody really goes? And if we do see somebody, why would they take any notice this time of the day?''

Not only that - just some of the hidden rules annoy me too. Why don't all humans just live and let live?!

Anyone else get so annoyed - and overwhelmed - with the pressure of comforming? (It's even worse when you don't want to stand out either!)

Mainly that's not how evolution works. Otherwise mankind wouldn't even exist...Most AS-related impairments reduce the probabilty of finding a mating-partner. Thats's what it comes down to finally. 'Live and let live' is the opposite of evolution (yeah cooperation in behaviour of animals i know, but you get my point).

I don't mean rioting and murdering should be acceptable, but stupid little things like women making a fuss because another woman's trousers are too short for her legs (has ''jack-ups'') gets on my nerves. That's what I meant. Conformism is reasonable to a certain extent, but it's gone a bit too far with all the fashion and everything.

Because its what the neurotypical world expects from us constantly and we're not capable of it.

Our brains do not interpret social conformity as rational, or necessary and in fact it seems to lower standards across the board by maintaining a herd mentality and discouraging analysis and individual problem solving. It seems counterproductive and yet its the norm that the majority insist upon.

How would anyone with intelligence and pragmatism not find that frustrating?

If there was a way to give a poster rep or a post a thumbs-up, I would do just that for Willard/this post.

My sentiments exactly, only expressed in a much more fluent and logic way.

The most intelligent people I know are actually neurotypical. I mean seriously, just because we don't get those rules doesn't mean we're surrounded by sheep...

Because conformism is boring.

And guess what

So called "non conformists" are just as boring and stupid as conformists. Alot of these hipster types would tell you what to eat, how to dress, and what bands to listen to, in other words, conform so that you're "non conformist" just like them.
A true nonconformist is somebody who just doesn't give a crap and gets on with their life, disreguarding what other people think.

Yes! exactly. Why complaining about how other people are? It just divides people.

Then they are conforming to the dictates of their souls!

Good point actually

The idea of nonconformism doesn't seem to work, because we all conform to something, whether it be our own feelings or influence from the outside world. If you didn't conform to eating, you'd be pretty screwed.

I tend to feel like that when I'm in the middle of a tedious self-waxing job. If mankind ever evolves past the disgust for female body hair (which I sadly share), I fear it's not going to happen anytime soon.

There is a pragmatism to conformity if you go into it with eyes wide open and stay aware of exactly what you are conforming to and exactly why. That way you can sort out which conformity is unecessary frippery and which conformity serves usefully as protective camoflauge. As you said, it promotes herd mentality. But I think the herd mentality (actually tribal mentality) predates what we call conformity and goes back to our hunter/gatherer days. When you conform to certain norms of the tribe (or herd, or group) they let you stay in the group. That's the pragmtaism.
