Hello. I do not like to join a web community and straight-away create a new topic, but I suppose I do have something I would like to talk about.

How do I bring up Asperger's syndrome with a psychiatrist? I have had difficulty bringing this issue up in the past. I was laughed at (by a different doctor). Another doctor refused to entertain the idea, and instead preferred to keep meetings short and mostly limited to the discussion of pharmaceutical medications (dosage, etc). I am interested in seeing a brand-new doctor to talk to about this issue, but I have my reservations due to the reactions of past doctors. There is also the possibility that I simply have no idea how to eloquently discuss Asperger's syndrome and the possibility that I may have it.

I have been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Major Depression. Recently, I was helping my father clean his closet, and I happened across a box filled with books on Autism and other Pervasive Developmental Disorders. These books reminded me of when I was young and visiting many doctors. I remember having great difficulty communicating, and I did not begin to talk until age 3. I am not sure if I consciously chose not to talk, or if I could not communicate. I remember feeling a great deal of frustration and confusion, which was the prevalent emotional mindset and memory from my early childhood. My motor skills were apparently slow to develop as well, and was one reason why I saw many doctors when I was young. My diagnosis, at that time, was autism.

I find that I can relate to the symptoms of Asperger's syndrome as much as I can relate to Depression. When I read symptom lists such as DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria, I have "flashbacks" to certain situations during my childhood. I feel that Asperger's explains a lot of difficulties I currently deal with too. I have grown out of many of my past issues though. Another concern is my dad, who exhibits symptoms.

I have a lot of reason to speculate. As mentioned before, I have brought this up and gotten unexpected reactions. I just want the doctors to take me seriously? How can I bring this up to the doctor? I am at a loss!

Because most psychiatrists are self-important little twits who dont care and dont want to listen?

At least I got his attention (and the 3 I talked to before him were quickly ruled out rather than wasting my time).

Have you got the option of tracking down a shrink who is already familiar with asperger's?

That way, they won't say: "Something about this person I don't like, they seem kinda dumb, and I have a feeling I can't trust them. I don't believe anything they say, must be alphabet soup."

Instead they'll say: "Something about this person I don't like, they seem kinda dumb, and I have a feeling I can't trust them. Must be an aspie.

Did you say that wasn't proper? Did you march out on the track?
You were quiet, just like mice. And now you say that we're not nice.
Well thank you buddy for your advice...

Im not explaining it to you again.

Suffice it to say covering a wound with a bandage doesnt make the wound magically disappear.

No.
My mother denies it to this day, but I have the memories. And why were these books in the closet, hmm? The special-ed classes? Not to mention relating to the symptoms. It doesn't add up. Since my IQ is above average, it could be High Functioning Autism or Asperger's. Not sure. I just don't care about the stigma anymore, I need an answer. No drugs, just an answer. Tests, brain scans, whatever needs to be done to ascertain this information.
I feel the need to compile vast amounts of information to help convey my plight. And refute tricky doctors who are quick to dismiss.

Haha. I'm kinda running out of new doctors to see at this point.

*sigh* its a very simple concept.. its not "hiding something you dont have" its hiding the fact that you dont have it or compensating by learning through rote memorization at an accelerated pace compared to their male counterparts and/or being shielded by others, etc, etc let me know when you actually understand what Im saying.. then Ill listen to your ranting.

if your whole argument is "females don't fit the male brain" or whatever you're right. because As, is mostley a male disorder. if the females Have As they'll show the same signs the males show. thats the way it is weather you like it or not.

It hasnt been proven to be a "mostly male disorder" and they dont show the same symptoms with the same severity because WOMEN ARE NOT MEN.

Why am I arguing with you? We've been through all this before and your hijacking the thread if you want to resume the debate then go post in the other thread where we've already talked about all this.

Oh and please stop double posting.
