I have just read on another thread about that jostling to avoid somebody walking towards you on the street, they step one way you step the other, they step the other way and so on.This happens to me every day it is so annoying why can't the streets be deserted. Is this an aspie trait because i am trying to gather as much information as i can ready for diagnosis.

Its annoying yes but not really an aspie trait.

A more aspie trait would be having to duck into an empty store at least every block to "rest" from the assault to the senses a busy sidewalk/street presents.

i don't think it is an aspergers trait. i think it is just people would not like to walk into eachother. i see people do it all the time and i know they can't all be AS

It's an aspie trait if you are fascinated by it and spend years researching it.

I figured out an answer to that from watching ice hockey. The player will "deke", i.e. make obvious moves in one direction and then fool the opponent by going in the other direction. I watched to see what was involved in signalling a direction. A lot of it is leaning your head that-a-way, and looking that-a-way. Also a slight lean from the waist up that-a-way as well. And no matter what other people do, that's the direction to keep going, don't change it. It works like a charm most of the time. But then, I live in a hockey town.

I adopt the strategy of using the same side of the pavement as cars use on the road. In the UK this means walking on the left.

This has two distinct advantages. Firstly, because you are heading in opposite directions, simply shouting "Left!" will mean both of you will correctly move in opposite directions, thereby avoiding uncertainty or a collision. In my country this instruction can, if necessary, be followed up with an insult such as "Where do you think you are, France?" :D

Actually your on to something there.. when two people meet and attempt to pass they both are naturally inclined to first attempt passing each other in the same direction as cars on the street in their country.

Claradoon

In your case, it's probably an aspie trait.

Spot them ahead and commit to side early this allows bothsides to adjust, unless the idiot isn't watching where they are going or it's a narrow space. It usually only happens if both sides dont notice until they are right on top of each other and accidently manage to step the same way, then notice so then automatically step the other way, except both brains are working at about the same rate and doing the same thing before they realise, often multiple times.

The other way is to commit to the way you were going initially and dont change, then the other person will automatically have switched the otherside anyway

Anyone could have difficulty with this (as I have observed), but excessive difficulty with it could mean it is in your case an Aspie trait. I simply do like Fraya says and then I worry about whether I should have gone second later...

Uhm...I dont get it...whats wrong with just standing still and letting the person walk around you?Seems like the most obvious and logical solution.

Because its considered rude, disrespectful, pompous, etc (I think).

oh...I thought I was being "passive" not pompous...I saw it(myself) as a rock in a stream, letting the river flow around me instead of trying to fight against it...guess this is "pompous" and not "zen"?

No thats zen.. expecting others to go around you because they arent worth the effort of getting out of their way is pompous.

You take a step to the side, they also take a step to the other side, you are equals and have both made an effort to get out of the other persons way, thus showing respect for one another.

Its stupid but its the way they work.

Plus if two aspies bump into each other how long will they both stand and stare at each other?

Probably until one or the other of them gets flustered, turns around, and walks the other way :)

I thought I was the only one that had thought about the idea that people pass each other the same way cars on a street do, but apparently not. And you've just confirmed my theory: Here in the USA, people pass each other on the right.
