I pace a lot, and have to basically always be moving. Last September, I got a car and I've put almost 50,000 miles on it. That got me wondering...could driving be a stim? Any thoughts?

Definitely, but I think a lot of people find it to be. There are many elements that make it interesting.. dealing with traffic.. finding your way in new areas.. continually seeing new things fly past you, new places you could stop and see more closely.. And some say it's a standard male attribute, the desire to roam.. but maybe it's just a human attribute and the male emphasis is societal (mimicking your ancestors)

I do enjoy driving, though I haven't lately, because I don't have a car, because they're really expensive overall. Also I think I'm bored of where I've lived for most of my life :)

So in short, yes

When a person first starts driving it usually takes a few months before the novelty of it wears off.

Holy Cow! I thought I drove a lot!! !! ! I drive about 30K miles/year.

I think it is for me. I have a "need" to go someplace every day, whether or not there is a reason. This is especially true, if there's any kind of worry in mind or any stress. Otherwise I get tense and feel imprisoned, and that's ridiculous because we live in a very large house on a 20-acre ranch. I don't know if this makes it a stim, but I find it to be a necessary daily routine, and I fear the situation whereby I might be unable to go out someplace (from here that means to drive, as there are no other means to get to town). I could walk, but that would be hours & hours.

I was asking myself the exact same question while driving home from another city yesterday. I love to drive. I love the calm feeling it gives me. I do think it is a stim in much the same manner as pacing, rocking, etc. The motion of the car on the road is very pleasant and comforting.

Yes, it can be, and it was for me back in the days when I was "stimming" more than I do now. I still find driving a motor vehicle relaxing, especially while driving through picturesque areas, but this is no longer a compulsory habit for me. - LJS

I don't know, I've never really known of "stimming" but like you, I used to pace sometimes for hours at a time. When I got a car and license, I did more or less the same thing. I'd just drive around for hours because I like it. Then again, my car was a Supra, and it made me feel sorta like Takumi from Initial D. I don't do it too much in my mom's Galant, due to her complaints about gas, and the fact it's a Galant.
