Meerkats are my main obession. I knew more about them than most supposed meerkat experts way before Meerkat Manor was released. Before then people only knew what meerkats were from Timon, from The Lion King (my other main obsession). Timon is not a very good example of a meerkat. His appearence is all wrong and he walks upright. His diet and behavior are messed up too. Real meerkats eat more than just insects (anything that will not eat them first) and why on earth does he not make little chirpy sounds? So hardly anyone knew what a meerkat was. I remember wanting to punch everyone for asking if they were some sort of feline. Once people did find out what they really were and found out how truely obessed I am with them they would tell me things such as "Do you like any other animals?" or "You really need to widen my horizons." Phycologists and shrinks were always telling my parents they needed to take away everything meerkat related from me and punish me whenever I talked about them. Luckily my parents changed shrinks whenever that was suggested. If they had followed that advice I would have probably commited sucide. Others told me I needed to take an example from the meerkats and be more social with people. Meerkats are only social with other meerkats and sometimes are downright brutal to each other. I remember wondering why it was totaly okay for other people my age to be downright obsessed with pop stars and Japanese cartoons but people treated me like I was some kind of criminal when they found out what I liked. Now that meerkat manor is so popular, everyone is okay with my meerkat obesssion. Why is it only okay to like something so much if it is popular with mainstream society. And for the record, I hate meerkat manor.

I'll rephrase your question

Why is NOT okay to like something so much if it is popular with mainstream society?

I like meerkats too! Not an obsession or special interest or anything but I think they're cute and I enjoy watching them at the zoo. Here are some pics I've taken of them.

I don't see why wanting to know everything there is to know about Meerkats is a bad thing, lol, as long as you realize that not everyone wants to know everything there is to know about Meerkats, because that is okay too :D

Well, I haven't the foggiest idea what Meerkat Manor is (and don't care). But meerkats are adorable, and very interesting little animals. An interest in meerkats is something I can understand and respect.

It seems to me that we, in the U.S. and perhaps western culture in general, are living in a really "dumbed down" era. Knowledge and intelligence isn't valued like it once was. It is a culture of "reality TV", Britney Spears, and "High School Musical." If the people around you think that those are the things that matter, then that is their loss, and their deficit.

I remember a friend of mine telling me that, when I only liked Hellsing and Trinity Blood and nothing else. I was upset about that for a long time, until I relaxed a little and discovered that my mind has a much wider capacity for obsessions than I thought possible.

And about Japanese cartoons - some people get teased for enjoying them. On one occasion, a girl called me a "Japanese wannabe" just because I had an anime picture on my binder.

hey punkykat...don't worry. if you hate meerkat manor so be it. And it shouldn't really matter if your interests intersect with mainstream society or do not intersect with it. they are part of what makes you who you are and if others think your meerkat obsession is now ok because it is validated by the tv series...well...doesn't that reveal something about them rather than something about you? i think you show great discernment in having such a fantastic obsession and special interest.

I feel your pain. My obsessions were guinea pigs and later, dairy goats (but only within a certain breed and a bloodline within that breed). You can probably imagine how sick and tired I became of hearing that A. All goats stink (they don't, only the bucks, and only during breeding season, unless you never bathe your goats) and B. That goats eat garbage or "anything" or clothing, etc (they're actually more fastidious than most people).

many neurotypicals say those who are obsessed with Anime are losers/nerds. Well it depends on the area and region.Say the heavily social people would probably be less anime-friendly but you can probably discuss it with people.

Also the type of anime you watch factors in. You won't see too many people watching obscure animes you d/l off the net.

Also, the same applies to popl stars....lesser in caucasian suburbs in the USA apparently
