I've been doing some research on Nazis for my Sonic the Hedgehog fan fiction. I've been listning to Coast to Coast AM (my favorite radio show) while I work on my art requests (I have eight slots left if you want something) and they have this one man on saying that what we call "genetics research" is just a contuation on the Nazi ideal of eugentics. Could Autism Speaks be part of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuFoScNtp5k&NR=1

it's probably not that research that would be the issue so much as the interpretation of it.

people always seem to forget that genes will work just fine when provided a proper environment. it's not the genes that are bad. it the interaction between the genes and the environment that creates problems.

Just so you know, the Nazis didn't start eugenics. They got the idea from America and England which was started by Francis Galton who used shoddy science to prove that you could breed out the weak by breeding only those without any disabilities or deformities.

Also, Autism Speaks aren't about curing autism anymore. They're about educating people about autism and providing help for autistics so they can get the best out of life.

It isn't shoddy science. While many disabilities aren't genetic, many are, and can be cured through eugenics. It is totally possible.

If it wasn't for moral concerns of some people, we could have already genetically engineered a human-bear-tiger-dolphin-walrus-cactus species. Wouldn't that be awesome? :?

Actually, it is shoddy science. Some of the genetics involved in passing along disorders are also involved in beneficial functions (I think sickle cell anemia is an example of this).

It also wasn't strictly moral, but also ethical. As in: forcibly sterilizing disabled women and women of color, especially

Nazi-ism and Autism Speaks are two entirely different things.

i believe that if you compare propaganda of autism speaks and nazis they are disturbingly similar. watch a hitler propaganda film against the disabled and then an autism speaks ad. i swear autism speaks must have gotten inspiration because they just translated and paraphrased hitlers very words.

It is not totally possible. Two healthy parents could have a child with learning problems and that child could grow up to have healthy children.
It's shoddy and immoral and terrible science that should never come back. It's the dark side of science. Science should be about celebrating the diverse range of humans. We celebrate a diverse range of other species.

Would you rather we just gas everyone you deemed unfit to breed to continue this long line of mental and physical fitness in your mind?

What about Mary Ann Kennedy? A woman who had a lower IQ than her brilliant brothers, labelled mentally ret*d even though to many friends of the family she appeared to just have a learning disorder. Some even saying she could have AS. Her IQ would have been average by todays standards. So, someone gets a lobotomy which actually makes her mentally ret*d and she lives out the rest of her days in an institution. At least she didn't catch the Kennedy curse.

Imagine what they would have done to people with autism back then?

What about autistic savants or even people with autism with a special skill? Sometimes you need mad people to come up with mad ideas to change the world.

What's wrong with that? I know Nazis are over used, but then so are aliens. In some of the Sonic comics, aparently it was aliens that sped up the evolution of animals. I never read the comics anyway and I hear that they are VERY inconsistant. Nazi history fit my main idea of the story...the hallow earth theory. The Nazis actualy went looking for an entry. Some say they found it. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. When you write a story with blue, talking hedgehogs, reality and accuracy kinda go out the window. I think some of the storylines of SatAM eppisodes and the comics are stupid, so what's so wrong with my story?

Pay special attention to 11:18. If they could add animal genes to people, why couldn't they add human genes to animals. It dosen't mean it's true, but it's fodder for my story. Think outside the box.

If Autism Speaks isn't about curing autism anymore, I wouldn't have known about it. I basicaly live under a rock. I've been too distracted by my obsessions to really pay attention to anything autism related. Guess what my new obsession is?

I'm autistic and I'm healthy. My ability to learn has nothing to do with my health.
