I was at hospital yesterday and a friend came to visit both me and another friend he had. Surprisingly, this friend was discovered to have MRSA. My friend (the visitor) didn't touch his friend directly or anything, but he spent a few minutes in the room with him, together with the other doctors. It's been 24 hours and he's got no symptoms whatsoever, but the doctor wants him to be tested (by checking his nose or something). Is it dangerous? Is it likely that he will become gravely ill? I'm worried, and he's worried too.

Thanks.

I thought that was a British-only disease.

Are Spanish hospitals disgusting? Many UK state ones certainly are.

Paul, I'm still here in hospital, that's why I haven't written. I've got my laptop, though. I'm so worried!

I didn't realise that you were still in hospital; I'm sorry. Has your condition improved?

They just say he COULD get it, or be a carrier at least... but I dunno... I mean, he's healthy, not inmunedepressed or anything...

Are these hospital staff known to, er, bend the truth?

They say he'll be allright if he's healthy. And that it's only potentially dangerous for those who are inmunedepressed, such as those suffering from cancer (ref. chemomiotherapy), AIDS, diabetes, etc. The doc said he would be fine even if he was a carrier. But I've read many people die from it, so I just wanted to see other people's opinions...

(I'm OK, thanks! You? :D )

I wouldn't be too worried about that.
I have worked as a nurse at dialysis and the patients with MRSA were treated in the same big room but separated. You said he didn't touch the person. Maybe this calms you down a bit. The possibility that healthy people get it is so low... don't be too worried :)

Bit down - the bloody weather isn't helping - but I'm going to Tenerife in five days for a week! :)

Do you feel better than when you last spoke to me via PM, is what I'm asking? :)

So if he was just with the doctors and stuff he'll be fine then? I feel so guilty. I asked him to come to visit me to hospital and he just decided to go and see this other friend too, in the second floor. By the way, the doctor placed antiseptic on his hands about 10 minutes after being in the room. My friend didn't touch the patient's skin or anything, but he was quite near him...

A doctor once told me that 75% of the population carries MRSA. It lives on the surface of the skin, and as long as their immune system is resonably functional it causes no problems.

I would guess that the doctor was merely trying to stop your friend spreading MRSA to other vulnerable patients/people rather than worrying they were going to get it.
