Hi All,
I am new to this group I am the parent of a seven year Autistic son who loves to play the drums and any instrument, he can sing he just started talking in December due to 4 years of hearing loss, he can draw anything and quickly, he athletic but yet his diagnosis is just Autistic and they can said that they don't know which he is and he was fully potty trained in 24 hours at age 2 and a half and there is not one direction that he has never followed.
This is all ming boggling to me but he is progressing each day and his behavior is not getting calmer and most focused. I don't know what to do because which is he to get the proper help.
When you ask what type he is... Do you mean things like low functioning, high functioning and Asperger Syndrome?
If that's not what you mean, autism is autism, I'm pretty sure there aren't really "types" just different levels of severity.
These are definitely questions you can also ask his teachers, principals, doctors, etc. Try posting in the parent section of the forum as well, you might get more help there. Sorry!
Autism is such a complex condition that, in terms of finding appropriate help for your son, it probably doesn't matter what particular label he has. I suggest trying to focus on your son's particular symptoms/difficulties, rather than on the diagnostic label he's been given; Two people with "Classic autism" might have very different needs and challenges, and the type of help that is appropriate depends on the person--not the diagnostic label.
Did you get a report with his diagnosis? If so, does it list his particular difficulties?
Do you have access to any helping professionals (e.g. psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists) who are knowledgeable about autism spectrum disorders?
