Am I an aspie?
Sorry for just another one of these topics, but I'm really frustrated right now and I need an opinion on this.
First of all: Hi, I'm Laura, I'm 15 years old and I'm from the Netherlands.
I've always been a bit different from other kids my age. Recently, I stumbled upon the wikipedia article about Asperger's syndrome, and I recognised alot from it. So now I'm thinking that I might be an aspie. But the thing is, I'm not really sure. I do have a lot of the symptoms, but there are also some that I don't have.
First the things I do have:
- Bad at social things.
I was bullied at primary school because I didn't get what is socially appropriate and what isn't. I always said things you better shouldn't. But towards the ending of elementary school, I suddenly got that this was the reason I was bullied, so I stopped saying those things and I wasn't bullied that much anymore. I read that this is common in people with Asperger's: correcting your behaviour with your intelligence.
But I still have issues. I often don't know what to say in conversations and I stutter a little when i'm anxious or when I feel pressure in a social situation. And I find it difficult do small talk. I'd rather talk about something that interests me or something that matters.
If often ask a question about schoolwork or about something in the news when I don't know what to say.
I also have trouble making friends, and sometimes I can socialize with a paticular person very well and sometimes I don't.
- Strong interests.
I have had quite a few of special interests in my life: Vampires, (big) cats, Jesus (I didn't even remember this one, my mom told me lol) , several artists, psychology..
I remember telling people about my interests when I was younger without getting that they weren't interested in them themselves, but I don't do that anymore.
I also had/have some stims:
- Handflapping when I was younger,
-A weird movement with my hands/fingers (can't really explain it)
- Tapping my foot when I sit on the couch
- Biting my nails
- Smelling my hands
- I don't know if this counts, but when I was younger I often chewed on rubber and felt it with my fingers because I really liked the texture.
Sensory issues:
Not very severe, but I do believe that I'm a bit more sensitive than others. For instance, I HATE the sound of motor bikes. It makes me very angry inside. And I don't like it when the tv is too loud or when people talk loud or scream.
And I can get very panicky (sp?) in busy places, but I won't get a meltdown or anything. I also dislike bright lights.
Ramdom things:
-I'm very perfectionistic
- I'm clumsy
- I don't make eyecontact, or only very short, then I HAVE to look away
- I'm always very detailed, as you can see lol
- I have difficulties imitating people with movements, for instance when learning the choreography of a dance
- I'm self-centered, but not egoistic
- I have a good feeling for morals and I respect teachers/my parents more than most people my age
- I have never had a boyfriend
- I'm a visual thinker
- I have a big vocabulary
-I feel an urge to correct people with grammar/spelling/facts
- I love random facts
- I love statistics
- I have a monotone voice
- I often lose overview of things I have to do for school and just stop doing anything
And there's still alot of things that i've forgotten..
But then there are some major things that I don't have:
- Lack of body language/ not understanding other people's body language
- Not understanding facial expressions
- having to have rituals/not being able to cope with change
I know that you people can't be sure from just reading this, but I would like to know what you guys think.
Do I have Aspergers or maybe PDD-NOS?
My mom thinks I might have it, she has told me that she has thought about it before when i was younger, and my aunt who has 3 children with ASS has also told my mom that I show signs of it..
Please let me know, I'm quite desperate, sometimes I'm sure I have it and sometimes I'm really doubting..
Sounds like AS indeed,
I myself have McDD but i recognise some of the symptoms but not all, so i can pretty much exclude that. McDD is also very close to PDD-NOS so i could also exclude that. But to be honest you should get a real diagnose, because no one can diagnose over the internet.
But yea, chances are you`re on the spectrum
EDIT: LoL why are you still up so late?

Thanks for your reply

Yes I have also read about McDD but I don't recognise alot of the symptoms of that, so it's probably not that.
Yes I will probably go for a diagnosis someday, but I want to be sure that I have it before I get a diagnosis..
Hahaha I thought someone would notice that

Ps. You're also from the Netherlands

You definitely seems like you could have Asperger's.
Going to see a psychologist for a diagnosis would give you a better idea.
