I am curious if anyone here can talk to/understand animals. If so, did you develop this skill and how did you do so, or is it something that you could just always do?

I can't "talk" to animals, but I animals do understand me and I understand them. Not in a way of talking, of course, but it was always easier for me to connect with an animal than with people. Animals react to me in a positive way. Sometimes, when I walk down the street, dogs approach me out of nowhere to play or cuddle. Same goes with cats. And I notice animals on the street more than I notice people. For example, once I passed a celebrity who was walking the dog. I petted the dog and I could describe the dog in detail. I didn't even pay attention to the owner until people said: "do you know who that was?" (I mean, I knew the man and I could recognize him on TV... I just didn't pay attention to him because of his dog).

It's definitely easier for me to connect to animals and animals react positively to me. I only wish I could communicate that well with people.

I wouldn't say that I can "talk" to them, but I understand animals and they understand me much better than with people. We also like each other far more frequently. My kids always laugh at me and say that if we are going to walk anywhere we need to add fifteen extra minutes of travel time so that I can talk to and pet every cat along the way  While I get along well with all animals, I probably have the least connection with dogs of all the companion animals; I am much closer with cats and horses.

I would say that I can talk to them psychically (is that even a word?).
I've always had a special connection with animals, no matter the species. It's the reason why I'm vegan.
Looking at them I can tell what they are thinking. I guess it's because their body languages is a lot more straight forward than peoples. This isn't something I've learned... I was just born this way, just like I was born with AS.

talk as in casual gossip then no. but i have always been happy with animals and they trust me, its one reason i'm a zookeeper. My friends dog tried to rip the hands off any one who approuched her puppies but i (not knowing this) just walked ina nd picke done up and she put her head on my lap and wagged her tail. I think having a more open and less emotional attitute helps as it calms the chemicals in your body, not sending out so many smells and hormones which can cause animals to react funny. as for talking, animals cant communicate with humans in that way. parrots can mimik but its not actual communication, animals react to the responses humans give them. for animals its simple, life-food-sex-offspring. so not the drama!

Of course I can talk to animals. They don't have a clue what I'm saying, of course; but I can talk to them all I like.

Animals don't use language. The whole Dr. Doolittle thing is kind of silly, really. :)

Yes, though one cannot have a very satisfying verbal conversation with an animal.....but I can also understand them pretty well, their communication is quite a bit more simple than human communication.

This is quite a tricky one for me because it's been a while since I made the concious decision that no longer would I talk to, own or even stroke an animal. This was because I thought it would be more worth my while putting all that attention into my human relationships. It seems to have worked.

I talk to animals all the time but most of them don't understand me. However, cats seem to understand me quite well.
It's not the words that most animals understand but the tone of the voice, the look and the gestures.

I can communicate pretty well with animals. Of course it's all non verbal communication because they lack the proper mouth muscles to speak human words. But cat's & dogs are some of the most interesting people I know.
It's a skill I acquired growing up around cats & dogs. I didn't really like other kids much, animals we're more fun.

Oh yes, I can talk to animals, but I don't think they understand me.

Animals are individuals, anyway. There are a few signals that all cats use; but you have to get to know a particular cat to know the specifics of how it uses them.

I've always been told I have a "gift" with them. I could always understand why an animal was "acting up" or "bad" and it was usualy something simple and the owner couldn't get it through their head why the animal was that way but it was as clear as day to me.

It's just another language. Different for each type of animal, but they all communicate in one form or another. If you spend enough time with one, you can learn to understand what they're communicating at least to some extent. I don't believe this has anything to do with Autism though. Plenty of NT's are capable of it too.

What does make this kind of interesting in relation to Autism is the fact that vocal intonations and body language are actually much more important in the animal realm. Which makes me wonder if Autistics are any better at it than NT's. From what I've seen of my own kids, I don't think we are. I have to tell them to leave the damned cats alone all the time because they don't see that they are getting irritated.

I'm a "mutt magnet." Almost all dogs like me. I usually get down on their level, & let them approach me. I've even had some people comment that their dogs usually are stand-offish with strangers, & are surprised when they come right up to me without any sign of fear. Personally, I trust animals a lot more than people because humans can be pretty mean.

A few years ago I had a little bird called Tooty Fruity, now me and Tooty Fruity were really close, I used to talk to her and tell her all my problems and she'd sit on my shoulder and listen without judgement. Anyway at that time I also lived with my partner at the time and he told me that Tooty Fruity always used to start getting really excited and she used to start chirping really loud when she knew I was nearly home. do you think she could sense me coming? Like I said before though I don't keep pets any more.
