This may seem a little odd but it's an honest question. Does anyone else ever get bladder shy? When you have to pee really bad but simply cannot go because other people can see/hear you?

I have had this seemingly small problem for my entire life. It really sucks to be completely honest. If I have to pee in a bathroom with no lock and multiple urinals/toilets, forget it I would never be able to go. Sometimes I can't even go in private bathrooms. I get paranoid that people are listening to me pee, or that someone will come in or something. I also get paranoid that people are going to realize that I get "stage-freight" and make fun of me for not being able to go.

I have to make sure that any plans I have, to include a "safe" bathroom that I will be able to use. I can't go to certain friends house's because I fear that people will be able to hear whether or not I go. I can go to concerts and stuff as long as they have porta-john's NOT the crowded multi-stall bathrooms. It might not seem like a big deal, but you try and go out for a few drinks with out using the bathroom the entire night and let me know how you feel afterwards.

Am I all alone on this one??

Yes, I'm just like this, except maybe a little bit less concerned with being heard. Also I wouldn't even attempt to pee if I felt other people might be able to see me, I'm that prudent.

WOW, what a coincidence.
I was just thinking about posting a thread about this.
You are not alone (or maybe perhaps you want to be ;) )

I have always had a tough time with public restrooms and bathrooms at the houses of people I don't know well.
The busier the restroom, the worse it is. I'll even have a tough time if I know someone is waiting on me. I've had nightmare first dates where I couldn't go for hours. Then I'd have to end the date early, giving the wrong impression so that I can go find a "comfortable" restroom.

Urine tests for drugs, or for routine physical exams are particularly stressful for me. Even though I am totally clean. It will be nearly impossible to go because I know there some stranger outside that door waiting on me. I try to explain it to the medical staff, but they look at me like I'm insane.

FINALLY!! ! someone else who understands my problem.
Thank you for posting this thread.

What I would give to be able to freely and openly pee whenever and wherever I want.
(That doesn't sound too weird does it?)

You're not alone. Any sort of private bathroom and I'm fine. Urinals with dividers are usually ok. Crowded bars and concerts are a nightmare.

That's a very common problem. Many, many NT's have it as well. It crosses all barriers.

i lean forward and clamp my hands over my ears so i feel isolated and alone. BUT i am female so it is a little easier, though i suppose a man could use a stall and do something similar. also, i think about running water or imagine a song running through my head to distract me. then it sort of happens without thinking.

on a side note, something interesting that my friend told me, and another friend agreed with, is that they get embarrassed to have people noticing how much toilet paper they use!! ! they are afraid of seeming dirty and wasteful so they verrrrryyyy quietlyyyyy pull sheets off the roll. it never occurred to me to care about that.

Haha, finally someone who understands! I heard everything you said loud and clear buddy.

You think the first date thing was bad? Check this out: I was on probation for 2 years. My probation officer was the biggest dick in the world. I wasn't even in trouble for drug use, yet he called me a scum-bag junkie. He was so determined to catch me failing a urine test. He would stand behind me in this little single person bathroom. To add to the stress, this bathroom was even had a little mirror above the toilet angled at my crotch, so that he could see from behind. I was literally shaking in my bones, completely riddled with anxiety.

After several minutes of not being able to urinate he drops this question on me "what are so afraid of? You been using dope or something?" I pleaded for him to believe me that I hadn't used drugs. He did not believe a word I was saying about being stage-freight and he threatened to put me in jail. He told me that refusing to take a drug test was just as good as failing one!

My argument was I hadn't refused to take one, I was just physically was incapable or doing so. Thank god I was able to hold my ground and get out of there! I've never been so stressed out in my entire life...geez

^^ If I put my hands over my ears while I use the bathroom....well my pee will everywhere everywhere but in the toilet.

No, I'm not like this. If I need to use the bathroom, I don't feel shy letting my bodily functions known. Sometimes using a public restroom when I need to take a massive number two is really funny.

TheWanderer, if you sit down to urinate, does a male need to ummm, hold his equipment? i've never seen a man pee while seated so i dunno. if he doesn't have to grip it, he can cover his ears. if he does have to, he could turn on his iPod instead. some people whistle or hum, too. if a person can 'tune' people out, they will feel more like they are alone.

Ugh...well depending on the current state of the "equipment" the stream might naturally go over the seat if not directed, it simply isn't safe for a man not to control it, it probably more dangerous while seated than while standing as at least a man is facing the toilet while standing.

It took me years before I finally decided to open up my father's copy of Grey's Anatomy and settle once and for all if girls had two holes or three and figure out how exactly they urinate.

I'm more concerned about the unnecessarily high coefficient of friction between the toilet paper roller core and the thing that holds it in place. That, and the lack of tensile strength in the toilet paper roll itself as a result of the perforation. Combined, grabbing more than one square is impossible. Who in their right mind only uses one square?
