I take yearly visits to my grandparents’ house. Once there, our family mingles. Well, maybe “mingle” is not the correct word to use.

As my brother is preoccupied fixing everyone’s laptop, my eight year old cousin is reading a book that my grandmother was reluctant to give him because only college students should be able to understand. This is normal for him since he tested out of high school reading despite attending an elementary school. Then there is my grandfather who talks more to his two border collies than to his own wife. Oh yeah, then there’s my dad who is lecturing about god knows what: chemistry, politics, sexism? This is all happening while I observe them and also the females of my family. Unsurprisingly, none of them are gossiping, talking about fashion, or um, “normal” things women are suppose to talk about. In fact, my aunt was trying to compete with me when I did join in her conversation with others.

Either autism runs in my family, or my family is far from being typical. Then again who knows what typical is suppose to be.

Your family sounds even more autistic acting than mine. My extended family actuall has conversations, even though they are the most unusual of topics.
