I read this article in the mirror a couple of days ago and wonder if there is any truth in it?

They'll be blaming brocolli next...

But yeah I think autism is one of these conditions which has no explanation so people decide to make up an explanation. I don't think it is that simple really.

Also... autistic rats? Whut!? 8O

As articles go this sounds very very thin. Apart from the reference to more frequent diagnosis (which one would expect given that a coherent AS diagnosis wasn't really around before the early 80s) I'd say that the article is peppered with 'mays' and 'possibles'' .

Older or obese mothers or pregnant women on anti depressants lead to more premature births which in turn appears to have some ill-defined correlation with the prevalence of autism? Wow, a lot of the press's favourite targets all in the one theory.

I don't know what if any serious research is underlying this article. Happy to be corrected if someone knows about this research.

No, silly. Broccoli causes cancer not autism. Don't you read the Daily Mail...? :D

Autism is caused by space aliens. :D

Look at it this way.

When I was 8 or 9 the world population was under 3 billion.

Recently it has hit 7 billion.

OMG not only have the obese depressed middle aged mothers increased autism by having premi babies but their premi babies turn out to be obese depressed middle aged women who are having more babies, who grow up to be...
Well you should get it by now.

Bigger population + broad autism spectrum = increase in autism.
