I've always walked so that my head does not bob at all, and the only way I was able to justify it before I was diagnosed was by thinking that my brain was being sloshed around a hell of a lot less than most people's (who go up and down when they walk).

Seriously, you could put a book on my head and tell me to walk - it would not fall off. My shoes wear down on the outsides of the heels because of the technique it takes to do this. It seems complicated, but it came naturally and I've done it forever. The only times I've ever been "picked on" have been people telling me that I walk strangely.

I believe it serves a sensory purpose. Can anyone relate to this? I've never wanted to change the way I walk, because I like the way my eyes do not go up and down, so that it's like they're a movie camera panning smoothly. It certainly makes me feel awkward when people are watching me walk, though.

Interesting, I walk that way as well. It never crossed my mind that it might be connected to AS though.

Same here, I've tried to walk like other people, but I can't get the bob, it just feels right for my head to be steady.

Interesting. I don't bob but I think it's on purpose. When I was in Jr. High, I was so awkward that my mother sent me to the Sear's Charm School where they taught me how to walk. A few years after that I saw a film about geisha and determined to walk like a willow, just 'cause I thought it was neat.

Before I became clumsy (growing 5 inches in one summer), I'd never given it a thought so I don't know if I bobbed before that. No one said anything. It does feel like the right thing to do for my brain. I also try to walk so my heels don't hit hard. It makes a thump in my head.

I didn't know people bobbed their heads. I have tried balancing books on my head and they always fell off so I guess I do bob my head :?

If you walk like that but also low to the ground you have Groucho Marxism!

I walk with my feet in front of my body...some people said i was walking like Droopy the cartoon caracter, and i get stressed when people are walking behind me. When i was younger i hunched a lot becouse i was taller then my other classmates and that made feel in the center of attention.

People have always told me I walked strangely. I like to keep my head steady while walking as well, and I achieve this by walking on my toes. My head is usually tilted slightly to the left or right though, is that weird?

I just tried to figure out if I do this or not. I can't tell, as I believe the over examination of my walk while walking affected my walk itself. Would have to have someone secretly verify this.

I do walk very differently when barefoot, in socks or with my boots on. Am also flat footed, land with toe and heel at same time, or toe first or toe only sometimes. Also, my walk changes with my mood. I can lean forward and storm ahead when in a hurry. I can lean back and saunter. I seem to do an awful lot of pivoting on one foot, especially when cooking or working on projects.

But I am not certain if this "bobbing" you speak of is in tandem with, or in opposition with the rest of the body. When running, the head will carve arcs through space along with the rest of the body. Is that bobbing? Or is bobbing a nod, when the distance from chin to clavicle shifts with every step.

Sparx, I an also a head-tilter. I believe it may be "weird," yes. Unless you are a canine.

I mean the top of the head gaining and losing vertical height as one walks, which has nothing to do with the neck because it occurs at the legs, so shoulder and torso positional height would fluctuate as well.

When I see normal people walking, they seem to rise and fall a little with each step (imagine the top of the head):

-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^

Whereas the top of my head stays at a more constant:

I've been told I walk strangely but I don't know if I bob or not. Hmmm...
