A college aspie here in Taiwan just committed suicide because he thinks that he is being sexually harassed by his female dance mate while taking a dance course, says the media.
The media is also stressing the idea of aspie people being geniuses, which is not the truth.

Somebody give these people some brains. Ugh. I think he committed suicide because physical touch gives him meltdowns+he is bullied+and he is depressed.

Not just because he has Asperger's. No wonder folks here in Taiwan have such a strong stereotype for Asperger's. Blame the media.

Bullied and depressed is enough for anyone to commit suicide, Aspie or not. His parents must be heartbroken.

The media can be pretty clueless here too. Autistics are apparently either savants or geniuses or pitiful tragedies. We're not allowed to be everyday people, apparently.

This image is definitely the one that my family and friends associates with autism. I remember when I brought up getting a diagnosis to a close friend, he said, "You're too smart to be autistic." He thought that I shouldn't be able to talk or something if I was on the spectrum.

I wish the media would show images of "everyday autistics" as you wrote. We need to get beyond the image of non-communicative, tragic geniuses. We need to recognize people for who they actually are, not who they are idealized to be.

There are a lot of NTs who have troubled lives. We're all just people…

Do you have a link to the story? What type of "advances" were made that had upset him?

OMG we did square dancing too! Did you go to my school? There is nothing like - and I'm quoting a comedian here - "a neo-nazi Foghorn Leghorn dictating your every move on the dance floor" to put you off the entire thing. That and those big skirts we had to wear over our gymclothes. The last time I wore a skirt that big was for an aunt's tea she was giving for a girl who was getting married and I was 7 and got dragged to it. There were jingle bells sewn into that skirt. And ribbons all over. And an actual reason to wear it. Not like in gym. It was like wearing flag football belts when I had to wear the skirt in gym.

The girls did not have to wear dresses in our school. They assigned people by their posistion on the roster and as it turned out no one was paired up with someone they liked. The girl I was suposed to be teamed up with sat in front of me in social studies. Since I sat out she was paired up with a real freak. I thought she was going to kill me when we got back into class. She said I was no winner but she at least knew me and did not like touching people so she felt safe with me.

Losing an only child, or any child for that matter, can be heartbreaking. I know what that feels like (although suicide was not involved). I was, however, one of those children who attempted suicide due to bullying (although it was many many years ago now) and know what it feels like from his side of things.

My heart goes out to them all.
