I had about 3 hrs of psychological testing today. One of the tests was reading a photo of people's eyes (the rest of the face was not visible). It's tough.

Anyone else have this?

I'm good at ''reading'' eyes when I'm speaking to someone face-to-face, and when I pass people in the street (but sometimes people just glare without thinking or feeling anything), but I ALWAYS fail when doing these sorts of tests on a screen. In order for me to ''read'' eyes properly, it needs to be subconsciously in everyday situations. Otherwise it just does not work.

I am horrible at reading people in actual human interactions, but I can match the picture of the eyes to the word describing the state of the mind on the multiple choice tests.

Same.

If its a multiple choice test of pictures, I score about average. If you make me read someone's facial expression in person, I usually can't get more than 'positive' or 'negative'

I would do horrible on this test if it were fill in the blank. I wonder how NTs would do in that case. They would be able to think of more states of mind than I would. Once someone else has thought of the states of mind and written them on the multiple choice test, it just become process of elimination.

If it were fill in the blank I'd do far worse as well, I'm not sure how badly, because I have no idea how to compare myself to others. I do know that on some of them I see the eyes and the lists of options and what I'd have guessed isn't available at all... so I just guess randomly.

I relate to that. I cannot connect the given options with the faces.

reading eyes? there's no way, even in the easiest type of those questions (hate of love, for example), i score less then chance...

i can usually determine emotion and state of mind of people i know a while, but that makes use of many different inputs; if i'm limited to eyes/face only or facing a person i only recently met, i can bet my lifes savings that i'm getting it wrong

I found that test on the net... I thought exactly the same thing. I'd look at the eyes and know exactly what the expression was, thus thinking I was doing really well on it, but then the option wouldn't be there. I think I probably got the right answer from the ones that were there (I just did it myself on my laptop so I wasn't being assessed or anything) but I wouldn't have said those ones if it was completely open :?

Same here, the interpretations I wanted to give for most of them were not in the list of options.

I have the opposite problem with fill in the blank, which is that my mind would be blank, and I would fill in "nothing" for most of the questions. Most of the expressions in the eyes are not very strong.

Where on the web is this? I didn't do it on a computer through web, but with photos and words on paper with a psychologist.

I think this kind of test reveals your ability to interpret facial expressions in pictures, rather than in real interactions.

I posted in another thread about this test before. I did poorly on the online test, feeling, as many did, that the options for what I saw sometimes just weren't there but that I could sometimes get a right answer simply because it was multiple choice. The site claims that most people will actually be quite good at this - better than they expect. That indicates to me that the people who posted it expected mostly NTs to entertain themselves by taking it there. It's not meant for anything but their entertainment. Taking it for real, in a clinical setting, is what is meant for people who might be on the spectrum.

I know this is an old discussion, but I just took this test and I did really good, but I think i did it by ruling things out. I'm fairly certain I could not do that test if it was fill in the blank. they all looked the same to me really. . .
