talking about your interests

Keeping your interest(s) secret or trying to hide it as long as possible (only for one person, you could talk about it as much as you like to other people)... Would you consider this possible? If yes, for how long? Days, hours, minutes? (weeks?)

Because I think having weird interests wouldn't make a good first impression on people

I don't know, I haven't tried...

I have a weird method, I talk to people who aren't familiar with my interests... That way it sounds new and interesting to them. I only shut down with fans typically. I know it's not the way people go about it, but it always worked for me.

Explicit line in the sand drawn by my mother. No speaking of my interests at family functions at all. I have to listen to all the NT's special interests but since mine are weird (not children, families, marriage, etc) I'm not allowed to talk about them. Sigh. I've given up on having very many friends so ones that I instantly connect with I know won't care if I talk about my interests. I hide them from everyone else.

I have to admit that I kind of do this with some of the music which I listen to, with Marilyn Manson being one example. My experience has been that people who either know little about the band, or are familiar with them (but NOT a fan), are generally not very nice about expressing their opinion. And because this is a band whose music I enjoy very much, I don't bring them up unless I know the other person is a fan or can at least be civil about not being one.

I only talk to people that I trust about my special interests. I don't trust my family and I don't trust members of my generation. I also don't trust the young and typical people from generations after my own. I only talk to my friends about my special interests and you guys on WP. I talk about my special interests with my friends, 10% of the time in relation to the intensity that I talk about them here. I'm not trying to annoy everybody on WP by talking about my interests here. If people are bothered by the intensity and amount of time I post about Mick Avory and The Kinks, they don't have to read my posts. I just ask that people leave that part of me alone, instead of making me their project and trying to train me not to talk about my special interests like a dog, or making threads about how my aspieness annoys them. I don't dare enter the chat room. I know that everybody is talking about my posting habits and what level they think I function at, because of that. I'm not the genus type like most of you are. My interests and life experiences are all that I can fall back on and talk about, because that's what I know.

Well I have to be careful about where I am am and who I am around when talking about some of my intrests, that can be kinda hard though because when I feel like going on about my intrests its kinda hard not to do so.

Other then that though I don't really see any reason to hide my intrests.

How strange, I was just thinking about this earlier. I don't really talk about any special interests when I have them. A couple of ones I have had in the past might be considered a bit odd, but in general I think I just fear being judged anyway so keep quiet. I wish I wasn't like that though.

My mother is pretty much the only person who will let me talk ad nauseum about my interests. If someone I know mentions they have the remotest interest in anything I like however, WATCH OUT! I will go on about it until they give me looks. Then it's back to my mother.

Lol I use my blabbering as a filter XP people who can put up with, or reply back are worth keeping around... all others I don't need XD

It really depends on which intrest. I only talk about certian intrests with certian people. I only talk about Sonic the Hedgehog with other Sonic fans but then maybe that's because I don't like having to explain things to people who aren't famaliar with it and espicaly people who I know aren't intrested.

This may sound really weird but I talk about my obsessions as a part of stimming. When I'm at home, and I bring up the people I am obsessed with, it kind of calms my nerves.

I figure I've really got nothing to hide. If people can't accept me for who I am, I don't think the relationship would work out anyway.

I've only really got out of denial on this one recently .......

I thought it was normal to discuss my special interests with everyone that (appeared to be) listening ...

Even writing this post now, I'm struggling not to start listing my most favourite bits of info about my special interest subject as I am DEFINITELY convinced everyone would want to know....

Very lucky I have such a patient partner!
