Not getting some kinds of humor....

Hey!

Am I the only one here who struggles to understand sarcasm, or other forms of similar humor? I don't find things like the Onion that funny because that kind of humor is harder for me to understand.

Idk...I'm not technically an aspie but I do have brain damage on the right side from fetal hypoxia, which has given me a lot of the same charactorisitics. Idk what to call myself...Person Who Has Perinatal Hypoxic Somatic Right Hempisphere Brain Injury is too much of a mouthful

Well, I do laugh at The Onion and such, but for me sarcasm is somewhat hard to tell unless I'm the one being sarcastic for a joke. And there's other humor I don't get, like Cracked.com, I just don't get how it's funny, it's tough to tell.

I can understand most stuff like TheOnion and Cracked, and I enjoy them. However, I have a really hard time with conversational humor/sarcasm, especially things said in a deadpan tone. Since I speak relatively deadpan most of the time, when other people do, it just seems normal to me, and I don't understand that they're being sarcastic. I'm also incredibly gullible, I have a really hard time sorting out when people are being facetious.

I'm good at sarcasm but some other humor may take me years to get.

I'll suddenly remember something, years later, and go "ooooooohhhhhhh!"

I forgot to add that I often make comments that *I* find desperately witty but in fact no one else does. I tend to think of myself as rather clever, which I sometimes am, but about 60% of the time my jokes are complex and difficult to comprehend unless you're me and you followed that train of thought.

Also double entendres and other disguised sexual humor goes right over my head.

I love humor, but I am very child like in many ways about it. I love things are specifically meant to be funny, like the onion, or stand up comedy, or a film. Because you're free to laugh about almost everything because you know ahead of time they are meaning to be quite funny. Sometimes I think something is hysterical and I find out later that it was funny for a totally different reason than what I thought it meant. Sometimes I laugh at things on Scrubs that no one else watching laughs at.

Sarcasm I understand technically, but it takes a great deal of effort for me to say something sarcastically because I am usually quite genuine in everything I say. When other people say it, it throws me for a total loop and I take them seriously and then appear naive. It just happens, I don't really feel that bad about it anymore because it is better to be too genuine than to be a fake person or liar in my opinion.

The people who are closest to me have caught on, and realize that they can tease me by saying things they don't mean in order to see my reaction until they tell me "oh I didnt even mean that, did you really think so". Oh well. I dont mind as long as they do it in a mean way or about anything serious.

Same here! I do like Cracked, but the Onion often goes over my head. I keep thinking I'm making witty comments when everyone else is like "wah?", although sometimes I do get a good laugh

A girl who later left my school figured out that I didn't get sarcasm, and began using it to get a laugh at my expense So, I did what I could and tried hard to learn how to discern sarcasm. I can now understand sarcasm about 60% of the time

I have always been told that I have a terrible sense of humor and I take things too literally. Often compared to people with autism and aspergers, like my little brother, or sheldon from the big bang theory.

Although my family seems to dense to make the connection...

But I do not get much of the humor in the onion either. so don't worry, you are not alone!

I can get sarcasam if I pick up on the irony, not the tone. I enjoy irony a lot.

That is humor, somewhere between irony and sarcasm I would guess.

I use sarcasm quite often, so I'm getting better and better at recognizing it. Sometimes I let one slip though, mostly because I don't pay too much attention to the meaning of words spoken to me.

I don't understand why kids laugh at people crying on TV. I don't think it's funny, but everyone in my classes seem to. I don't see how "Friday" is funny, just annoying, and while I understand some kinds of sarcasm, when spoken I sometimes take it seriously for a few seconds.

However, if people do the "sarcastic drawl" then I get it immediately.

I don't find things like the Onion that funny because they try too hard with too little.
