I noticed recently that I make faces. Not just goofy faces that one would make at a baby to try to get them to laugh. I mean, when I'm sitting here at the computer, doing work or whatever, I frequently get the compulsion to scrunch my face up like I just ate an entire lime. (I like lemons, so I can't say "lemon") It's quick. I don't stay like that, even if someone slaps me on the back. It's either a face like that, or something that looks like a cringe, like I just watched someone dive into a swimming pool filled with thumbtacks. You get the idea.

Would this be considered a tic or a stim? I've noticed that I do have a motor tic in my back, which rocking seems to help with at times. I know it's a tic, because I've read about the "urge" people with a tic disorder get right before the tic happens. Almost like restless leg syndrome. I suppose it's the same with my face. I also know that my dad does the same thing, and has for years. I always wondered what was up with that, and now I'm realizing what it is. I don't know how long I've been doing it, but I'm noticing it quite a bit since I've realized it's happening. Does anyone else here have the same thing going on? is it a part of AS, or could I have some separate tic disorder?

I am constantly suppressing the urge to make faces in meetings and during presentations (that i am giving). I personally think this has everything to do with my Asperger's.

I do this often. It is a little awkward when someone sees me doing it and asks me what is wrong.

I do this- when I indulge it it just gets steadily worse... I wouldn't mind so much if noone else could see me. Does it bother you a lot?

I try my hardest not to do it when there are people around. Luckily I'm alone in my office at work most of the time, or at home where I'm comfortable enough. Otherwise, yes, it would bother me.

I do that as well, at home but also when I'm out grocery shopping or whatever. It seems to happen more when I'm in the parking lot dodging cars as opposed to inside the store. No one seems to take notice of it, though. Maybe I'm more intimidating-looking than I realize. At this point in my life (and given my (fortunate) circumstances (not working)) I don't really care what people might think of it.

This happens to me often - even while listening to peoples opinions on something. I can't help scrunching my face in some manner. It's kinda annoying; either that or a nervous laugh which can be equally perilous. It's hard for me to contain some forms of mental stimulation that prompt the scrunching of the face tic.

It's between a smirk and smelling something bad, lol. It really confuses people.

People sometimes comment on the expressions I make and I don't even know that I'm making them. They suddenly react and ask me "what is that look for?" And I have no idea what they are talking about.

Hah, yeah. "...What's with the face?"

I did the scrunchy face a lot when I was little. My nickname was "crinkle nose". xD

i have been doing this for so long that i have well-developed facial muscles around my mouth. i can do some hilarious little expressions that make people laugh. when i was a teacher i had students say i was a little bit like a clown. i just allow the expressions to happen and integrate them into my conversations, mostly.

NTs do it too, but if a person did it often i'd call it a facial tic. many many disorders have tics. someone at my work who is probably an aspie has a coughing tic. listening to a short dry cough every 20 minutes for 8 hours is enought to drive me insane. fror some reason nobody else seems to notice it.

I usually keep a blank pokerface when I'm among people. And when I concentrate, I look grim and angry. Other than that (and being way too aware of my tongue; I can never find a comfortable parking position for that clumsy thing), I have only one facial issue: On the rare occasion when somebody is friendly to me or says something nice, I start to grin like an idiot, and I can't stop 8O

It must be oxytocin overload or something :D My synapses don't get a lot of that stuff anymore. I recently bought some cat toys at a supermarket, and the elderly lady at the checkout said something like "I have a cat too! She loves these rabbit fur mice, but she always chews their tails off". I was so perplexed and didn't know what to reply. I'm always puzzled and unable to respond when things don't go according to plan, and in this case the plan was "say hello, pay the asked amount, say goodbye". I had not mentally prepared myself for small talk. But I couldn't have talked even if I had known what to say, because I was grinning from one ear to the other.

I walked out of there with that crazy grin on my face. I felt great and horrible at the same time, because everyone seemed to be staring at me and I couldn't move my darn lips. I got on my bike and kept grinning like a madman on a cocaine binge all the way home. It was very embarrassing, but it's even worse if this happens in a social situation where I'm supposed to talk and can't just walk out. Like a vet's office, for example. I really wish I could get a handle on this.

I tend to make faces a lot, too. I like making faces! I try really hard to save it for when no one is around, though, because usually they result in weird reactions or questions and looks from other people.

I make faces when no one is around. It varies between cutesy face and huge grin face.
When I don't keep a hold on what my face is doing, I usually furrow my brow and look like I'm scowling at whoever is around. When I was little, my mother had to train me to hold my face at a more pleasant expression.
