I spent some time with a psychiatrist that is an ASD specialist today and she has determined that I am for sure on the spectrum either Asperger's or HFA (didn't get all the testing done today to determine exactly where on the spectrum I am, will get that done as time and finances allow). It's a relief to know. Now I can get on to figuring out how to improve the things I'm deficient in because of the ASD.

Thanks Psychegots! It's like a big old weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I have a reason why I'm so different. It's kind of nice...

P.S. Love the avatar. House is one of my most favorite shows.

Yes, most of us have had that feeling, especially those diagnosed as adults. In one way it's almost like a missing part of our identity.
Cool, and thank you!

Thanks! I think it does make me feel better because now I know why I do the things I do. It's not that I'm just a freak.

I was diagnosed a year and a half ago, in my 40s, and it was a major relief to know why I was different and had some "issues" other people didn't seem to have. Knowing is better than not knowing.

I couldn't have said it any better than that, Kate. I was diagnosed 2 years ago, also in my mid 40's, and felt exactly the same way.

It's nice to know that I'm not lazy, crazy, or stupid, my brain just functions in a different way and that there are things I'm really going to have to work hard at doing that come easy to NT's. It's easier to accept myself now too. I don't have to try and be what I'm not. I'm not an NT, it was exhausting trying to pretend I was. Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to forget all the social graces that have been pounded into me, it's not an excuse to be rude or annoying. I'm going to do my best to be polite and make friends and be social, but I can also cut myself slack and tell myself that it's OK to do some of the quirky things I do.

I think that's the right attitude indeed. Very few people know that I have Asperger's, but when speaking to those who know I don't even bother to try keeping any lasting eye contact. Them being acceptable of that is something I expect, even though it might feel strange to them. We have to do things that feels unnatural to us all the time so (at lest when people know) sometimes it should go both ways.
