The truth is that PDD-NOS is not a neat diagnostic category (a "junk drawer"), it's less recognized by the public (and even professionals), thus there's a preference among diagnosticians towards Asperger's, without any serious scientific basis. I've seen many cases when a PDD-NOS dx was later changed to Asperger's. Non of them is more severe than the other, though. If the psych thinks you don't fit in the stereotype (which is quite arbitrary and varies from person to person), you can't be diagnosed with it. Furthermore, some professionals think that PDD-NOS is a milder condition, which isn't. So, when the psych thinks you could fit in the stereotype of autism, but your symptoms are much lighter (as you show up to them at the sessions), they sometimes give you a PDD-NOS dx, as it's sometimes considered "HFA". This happened to me.
