I was just wondering since I'm learning about syndromes in my biology class, is AS caused by an abnormality in our chromosomes?? If so, then what chromosome is defected and how is it defective? I wanted to ask that question so badly today in school, but I wasn't sure about my bio teacher's knowledge about AS. If it's not caused by our chromosome development, then it should have never been called a syndrome in the first place. Any answers will do. Thanks.

This simple answer is we don't know yet. It's thought to be genetic, as ASDs do tend to run in families. But, as for the details, the jury's still out (or the scientists are still working on it).

It is at least partaly genetic. Actual genes as oposed to damaged, too few or too many cromisones. It does apear more in the oldest child which may show that it's not entirly genetic but I suspect it may be because younger siblings are helped and have a role to emulate making diagnosis more difficult.
I may be wrong but I think the word Syndrom means a collection of symtoms. Its used to avoid the word.desease and has nothing to do with the cromisones.

I think it's a mix of nature and nurture.

there is strong evidence that a pertmof the cause of AS has to do with out DNA (chromozons), but it is not the only cause.
and indeed; noone knows what chromosons are effected to cause AS, or even if it is a specific set of them...
